If people don't use BTC as a medium of exchange, it's not going to beat fiat. You can "spend and replace" BTC. Try to earn in BTC and pay others with BTC. Spending USD is using the enemy's money. Before that change you could run bitcoin with a raspberry pie. Now you cannot. It makes it harder for people to run nodes, which leads towards centralization

Around block 709k it slows down. Even though before they could spam in ways, this made it easier, so they took advantage.
