“항상 궁금했어요. 생명은 왜 이렇게 유한하고 짧은지. 그러다 강아지들은 사랑할 줄 아는 존재라서 그 짧은 생애로도 세상에 존재할 이유가 충분하다고 생각하게 됐죠. 그래서 곁에 있을 때 최선을 다해 사랑하고, 떠날 때는 잘 보내주자고요.” 이 여섯 ‘가족’은 모두 다른 곳에서 왔습니다. 정연과 쯔위가 트와이스라는 이름 아래 한 팀을 이뤘듯, 네 마리의 반려견도 각자의 사연을 품고서 말이죠. 정연은 친할머니 댁 옆집 할아버지가 편찮아지면서 더 이상 돌볼 수 없게 된 땅콩이를 데려왔고, 심한 피부병을 앓던 떠돌이 유키를 입양했습니다. 쯔위 또한 애정을 담아 함께하던 반려견을 떠나 보낸 뒤 임시보호하던 카야와 버터를 품에 안았고요.

“유키는 정말 겁이 많았어요. 산책조차 나가지 못했죠. 거의 2년 동안 매일 산책 훈련을 시켰는데, 그 과정이 정말 힘들었습니다. 근데 유키가 점점 좋아지는 모습을 보는 게 이렇게 행복한 일일 줄 몰랐어요! 이제 유키는 산책을 좋아해요. 여느 강아지들이 귀를 쫑긋 세우는 말, 유키에게는 그저 두렵게 들렸던 ‘산책할까?’에 꼬리를 흔들며 반응하던 그 순간, 저는 결국 눈물을 왈칵 쏟았어요.”

같은 경험과 기억, 같은 웃음과 행복을 공유하는 사이. 정연과 쯔위는 팀의 우정을 넘어, 또 하나의 세계를 완성합니다. 그러니 땅콩과 유키, 카야와 버터 사이를 잇는 건 우연이 아닌 필연의 사랑이겠지요.
