HE President William Ruto’s arrival in New York places Kenya’s development priorities on the international stage as world leaders gather for the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Among the key areas of focus are investment, African-led financing initiatives, artificial intelligence, and the proposed KSh 2.2 trillion East Africa Refinery in Lamu, which is projected to create more than 60,000 jobs.

President Ruto also expected to advocate for greater African representation in global institutions and strengthen engagement with the Kenyan diaspora.

The Government-to-Government fuel importation arrangement was introduced in 2023 to protect Kenya from the US Dollar shortage that threatened to halt the economy in 2022.

Since then:
Fuel supply has remained secure, with the Ministry saying no disruption has occurred since inception.

Payment for the local market is made in Kenya Shillings, backed by 180-day Letters of Credit. This has preserved forex reserves and stabilised the exchange rate.

Freight and premium have been renegotiated twice. Super Petrol is down from US$97.50 to US$84 per metric ton, and Diesel from US$118 to US$78.

The negotiated premiums stayed fixed even when spot market offers rose as high as US$400 per metric ton during the Middle East crisis.

Letter of Credit issuing banks have grown from KCB to include MCB, I&M, DTB, Stanbic, UBA and Equity.
