What also sucks is that i see the potential. The one scene where winston is at work is probably the most interesting so far. We see how he changes history, how history is changed, and we meet coworkers.
I'd also rather that instead of the narrator telling us Winston's thoughts or experiences, that hed WRITE IT IN HIS DIARY. Hes barely wrote shit so far and i see this as a waste.
Its just winston repeating the ingsoc propaganda we already know instead of the old man shedding light on his perspective. He speaks bluntly, forcefully and without giving pause to let the man think, remember and speak. Maybe that was a tangent.
The dialogue also tends to be a but blunt. In a scene where winston is chatting up an old man, who saw the time b4 big brother. But, rather than most of the dialogue coming from the man telling his story, its winston telling the man his story.
Just finished the first part/third of 1984 and OMG ITS SO BORING. It's just so lore dump heavy. Not lore heavy. LORE DUMP. There's no subtlety to any of this. It's functionally a textbook with snippets of a story in between. I get establishing the world at the start but damn.
The epitome of these 2 problems is chapter 7 (~7pages). Winston walks, sees smtng happen and scratches himself. Around a page worth of words to describe. The rest? LORE DUMP. PARAGRAPH AFTER PARAGRAPH OF LOOOOOORE. No opinions from winston. No meaningul words from the actors.
Winston's thoughts can also be a bit boring. More than half of his thoughts are on his disgust with women (ii understood correctly) and how he hates the party and other ppl. The same ideas over and over again.
It's not just the lore dumps that are boring. Winston is too. He's barely done shit so far. He walked, he drinked, he barely wrote anything in his diary, he watched other people. Given, without context it sounds worse than it actually is, but with its still sooo underwhelming
