Please consider reading this if you’re more interested in expert historians’ understanding of the British Empire than the myths peddled by polemicists. https://t.co/2Zgj2k2R3F
If I had to distill the top 3 myths being aired again & again to block a conversation on reparations it would be these:
Myth 1: That Britain abolished slavery around the world. Fact: Britain’s limited abolition was accompanied by the continued coercion of Black & Brown people to supply unpaid labour across the Empire.
@aljhlester, Professor of Historical Geography at @SussexUni, addresses common questions and misconceptions about the relevance and role of the trans-Atlantic slave trade today.: https://t.co/VALRXM5dap
A tactic often used to block a conversation about reparations for trans-Atlantic slavery is a false equivalence with Islamic slavery. This short film is a genuine comparison of the two awful systems. Thank you, the wonderful @atfdocumentary https://t.co/oOPeW6kcbX
What a great night screening our film to a full house on Tuesday! Huge thanks to @tnbfc for featuring @atfdocumentary as part of your #BHM2024 programme, and to #Rupert and the team at @blocqmul for hosting us so brilliantly. We are so grateful to everyone who came. 🎉🎬😀👏
After the Flood is screening at this year's @greenbeltfestival at 3pm on Friday 23 August at the No Fly Zone venue. The film will be introduced by theologian and broadcaster Dr Robert Beckford.
1/6 🧵I’ve given a few talks recently about trans-Atlantic slavery in British history, to people who really don’t want to hear it. I don’t mean haranguing shoppers in Oxford Street, but talks to church, community and business groups comprised of small ‘c’ conservative White people who’ve been willing to hear me out, even if they find it uncomfortable.
I’ve kept it factual and based it on two main databases: https://t.co/dvxBzLNT6U on British participation in the trans-Atlantic slave ‘trade’ and https://t.co/ShYr4TXB7W on slave ownership.
On every occasion, there have been two main objections. In case its useful for others, this thread sets out what they are, along with my own attempts to answer:
The Guardian has just published this article by Queen's tutor Robert Beckford: 'Will the Anglican church come clean and pay its debt over slavery? Not from what we have seen so far'
