Thanks @Jon_Allsop for focusing on the ongoing imprisonment of @RFERL journalists Vlad Yesypenko; Ihar Losik &Andrey Kuznechyk.
As the world rightly celebrates the release of Alsu, Evan and Vladimir, etc … our other colleagues still wait. Russia and Belarus controls their fate
Thank you President Biden for your leadership securing the freedom of #Alsu and the other FORMER detainees.
Thank you also for the compassion demonstrated to the families, including one special young lady who will never forget her birthday serenade from @POTUS
After more than nine months in prison, American @RFERL journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has been released as part of a large-scale prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia.
"We welcome news of Alsu’s imminent release and are grateful to the American government and all who worked tirelessly to end her unjust treatment by Russia," said @RFERL President & CEO @SteveCapus.

Alsu Kurmasheva: Family of another American journalist held in Russia call on Biden administration to do more to help | CNN Politics https://t.co/k52XWPnbnh
#Russia: The Supreme Court of Tatarstan has once again denied #AlsuKurmasheva's appeal for house arrest despite her deteriorating health and non-violent charges. The US-Russian journalist, detained since October 2023, continues to face severe conditions. Women Press Freedom condemns her continued persecution and demands her immediate and unconditional release.

This harsh treatment …
is unjustified … unnecessary… and inhumane. Alsu is an American citizen… a Mom to two wonderful kids … and the wife of a loving husband. Her fate is in Russia’s hands. End this injustice now reunite this family. #FreeAlsu
Today is Global Running Day. We are a family of runners, and #Alsu should be running with us today. Instead, she's being held in pretrial detention in Russia, denied phone calls with her daughters and U.S. consular visits. Alsu has been wrongfully detained in a Russian jail for nearly eight months on charges so absurd that even Russian government spokespeople have trouble commenting on them: failure to declare herself a ‘foreign agent,’ even though she’s not on the government’s list of designated ‘foreign agents,’ and spreading ‘false information’ as an American journalist. She flew to Russia over a year ago to address a family emergency wearing her Puma Nitro Velocity 2. Little did she know she’d end up wearing her running shoes in a Russian jail.
In a recent letter to her running friends, Alsu wrote, “Your support is like a second wind for me. You runners understand me like no one else. I can’t wait to join you because I choose health, freedom, and beauty.”
Today, we’re running for Alsu.

As we mark 230 days of Alsu’s detention in Russia today, I thank Chairman @RepMcCaul of @HouseForeignGOP for his steadfast support for Alsu and our family. My daughters know only a few members of Congress by name, but Rep. Michael McCaul certainly tops that list. His leadership in efforts to secure the release of Americans unjustly imprisoned abroad is inspiring.
Alsu has been kept away from her family for more than a year, with 230 of those days spent in a prison cell. She has been charged with not declaring herself a ‘foreign agent’ and spreading what the Kremlin calls ‘false information’ about its war on Ukraine. Alsu is in jail for her work with the congressionally funded, editorially independent @RFERL. There can be no doubt that her detention is wrongful. RFE/RL does not produce or distribute ‘false information.’ Alsu is not a ‘foreign agent.’ #FreeAlsu
This #MothersDay, our thoughts are with @RFERL journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, who is unjustly detained by Russia. Alsu has not been able to speak to her two young daughters for seven months.
Here's what her daughter Bibi told @CNN's @jaketapper about her mom:
