I grew up privileged. I rarely took public transport. But even that didn’t protect me.

I’ve been cat-called. I’ve had comments thrown at me and I’ve seen a guy touch himself while looking directly at me. This is literally from getting down from my car and walking into a building. That short walking distance alone was enough.

One time I took a bus “for fun” to go to KFC with my school friends. We were in our school uniforms. A grown man who was standing close rubbed his genitals on my arm while I was seated. It was intentional. I saw it on his face.
I was 16 or 17.

If I, someone raised protected and privileged, wasn’t safe - no woman is.

And the data reflects exactly that.

This isn’t a “some women experience it” issue. It’s widespread, it’s systemic, and it’s every woman’s reality in one form or another.

It’s time to accept that #srilanka
Stop the deflection.
Stop downplaying.
Stop being oblivious.

This is utterly embarrassing. One step forward and two steps back.

Buddhist monks turning up in Tamil/Muslim majority areas, putting up statues overnight, fencing off land, and suddenly discovering archaeological sites, and building temples with police or military protection… none of this is accidental, and none of it began today.

Every time you see monks trying to erect a new structure in a minority area, you are seeing the latest chapter of a story that has been unfolding for years.

Unless the state confronts the machinery behind it and not just the monks at the front... this pattern will continue.

But first the NPP needs to grow a backbone and absorb some short term pain to sort out this longstanding issue.
