#IranianCulturalSites Let’s tweet storm our favourite Iranian cultural sites:
Here’s my paternal hometown Kashan.. I loved the impromptu mini-concert taking advantage of the great acoustical elements courtesy of our incomparable architecture:
Unable to win on the battlefield, Israel’s Persian language Foreign Ministry acct is desperately trying to smear Iran’s national football team by creating AI generated lies. #TeamMelli
I don't think there's smugness or celebration of Iranian opposition efforts. Certainly not with respect to human rights activists inside Iran (or even outside). Very few people are celebrating what happened in January or any ongoing repression.
But yes; it is true, though, that there is some celebration of Pahlavi's and his supporters' "defeat", since not only was it they who celebrated (and danced with joy) on the first day of the war when 168 schoolchildren and their teachers were incinerated, neither Pahlavi himself nor any supporter has expressed even the slightest regret or sadness over the deaths of innocent men, women and children.
As to the "rights of the Iranian people", what agreement or accord between two governments involves the rights of their respective citizens? This memorandum specifically states that the US will not interfere in the internal affairs of Iran ( as the Algiers Accord of 1981 did which secured the release of the US embassy hostages). The "rights of the Soviet people" were never brought up in the arms control agreements of the 1980s, and the "rights of the North Korean people" were not mentioned in President Clinton's 1994 Framework Agreement. In this case, Iran didn't bring up the "rights of immigrants" to not be abused by ICE (including the rights of even their own citizens in America).
I guess he doesn't know that people remember that he NEVER argued that the war would be a military debacle. Quite the opposite.
He was one its biggest cheerleaders and consistently proclaimed how Iran was "on the brink".
It's astonishing that anyone would pay any attention to someone who not only got it wrong, but only weeks later denies what he was saying all along.
As to the newspaper that published his piece, one can be generous and say perhaps the editors didn't check his previous stance.
What the team has gone through over the last few months.
- Suspension of league, where 17 of the 26 players play. No competitive football for months for these players due to the war.
- Having to travel with bus to Turkey to play friendly games.
- Cancellation of friendly games.
- Change of team base camp just weeks before the World Cup.
- Uncertainty whether they will participate in the tournament or not.
- Uncertainty whether they will receive visas to compete at the tournament.
- Fake media stories including ones that claim they have to enter and leave USA the same day of the game. (The players see this, they get worried)
- Not being able to recover after the match and having to go back to their base camp in Mexico.
- Single entry visa being issued for a squad player and only being solved after the first game.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s speeches in the locker room won’t change anything.
FIFA and the host country, the United States, should have handled this in a better way.
These are not excuses for the game vs. New Zealand. The team must recover and do better in the upcoming games.
In my first piece as a contributing writer for @nytopinion, I look at how Iran's defiance in the face of the US war has transformed its standing across the non-Western world. From isolated and ignored, Tehran is now a symbol of defiance and a premonitory tale, stepping into its old role as adversary to empire.

Hello everyone! Let’s do some fact checking.
❓ Mehdi Torabi’s visa was single entry and he can’t enter the US anymore after returning to Mexico.
✅ True. (as of now)
❓ Mehdi Taremi’s visa has been revoked and won’t be able to enter the US anymore.
❌ False.
❓ Mehdi Taremi and Saeid Alhoei faced issues returning to Mexico and were questioned for a while at LAX.
✅ True.
❓ The team only found out they have to leave the US after the match.
🟰 Half true, half false. They found out pretty late but it was before the game.
❓ Mohammad Mohebi made a “shooting” celebration at Iranians with the Lion/Sun flag after scoring.
❌ False, it’s a normal celebration in football and he wasn’t aiming at anyone.
Here’s what he had to say after the game:
“First, I wanted to say thank you to all the Iranian fans that came to watch in Los Angeles. They made a great atmosphere in the game. The celebration was just coming in the mind, in the moment. I do it like this [gestures with his hands] and I wanted to do it like this for all the fans. It’s just a celebration you know, and that’s it.”
Enjoy your day! Some pretty exciting matches today. 🙏
