Something i have started paying more attention to in blockchain security is what happens when the technology protecting us needs to change.
It’s easy to focus on how secure a wallet is right now. But what happens if the cryptographic method it relies on becomes outdated years from today?
I think of it like a smart home.
Imagine being able to replace an old access system with a better one without having to rebuild the entire house or change everything inside it.
You’d want the upgrade to be as straightforward as possible.
That’s what makes @Starknet programmable accounts interesting to me.
With native account abstraction, accounts function as smart contracts, allowing their transaction validation logic to be customized.
This creates room for users to adopt different signature verification methods as security requirements change.
And there are some practical benefits to that design:
→ You can potentially change how your account verifies signatures.
→ You may be able to keep your existing account address and assets.
→ You don’t necessarily need a network-wide protocol upgrade just to change your account’s signing method.
Starknet’s Quantum Hub explores this through its Bunker Checklist, which includes an Account Change assessment focused on switching signing schemes without requiring a network upgrade.
Early post-quantum account implementations have also demonstrated the potential of this approach.
I find this important because the conversation around quantum computing isn’t just about whether existing cryptography could become vulnerable.
It’s also about how prepared blockchain infrastructure is to respond.
Of course, Starknet isn’t fully quantum-resistant today. Account flexibility is only one piece of the puzzle, and other cryptographic components and network dependencies still need to be considered.
But designing for change is a meaningful step.
We can’t predict every future security challenge, and we can’t guarantee that today’s methods will remain suitable forever.
What we can do is avoid building systems that make necessary upgrades unnecessarily difficult.
That’s the bigger idea behind cryptographic agility, and it’s why Starknet’s approach deserves a closer look.
