Cutting to the Chase: We are well aware that pilots are not the only ones within the #aviationindustry who face mental health challenges. It is also clear that others within the industry who face #mentalhealth issues need the same amount of support and help as #pilots do. However, if resources are limited and attention span is also limited, we should focus on that part of the problem that has an outsized impact relative to the other segments. Therefore, the initial focus on #pilotmentalhealth is important for the following reasons:

First, The impact of an adverse situation occurring because of a pilot's mental breakdown during flight outweighs that of other #aviation #professionals.

Second, With finite resources, we should always look first at the part of the problem that has the highest #risk impact and tackle that first.

Finally, once we take care of the highest risk, lessons learned there can be applied to the other risk areas.

Airlines must lay off thousands of employees ahead of the coming economic crisis.

What’s happening: Airlines will be forced in the months ahead, and perhaps for the foreseeable future to lay off employees, starting with non-unionized ones. The #airlineindustry is cyclical, and economic shocks are felt almost immediately, and airlines must respond. We see #airlines trying to respond, with a few looking to #mergers to deal with the challenges, of which some may fear having to file for #bankruptcy if they’re not able to find a way to deal with the challenges such as reducing cost. Here’s what we understand so far:

The airline industry is extremely sensitive to shocks, be they #economic, #geopolitical, or #environmental. Thus, we expect airlines to respond dramatically to the coming economic crisis.
Generally, personnel costs are the largest expense for an airline – with fuel costs a very close second. Therefore, as the economic and geopolitical crisis unfolds, expect airlines to aggressively lay off employees.
