2 months in America's most cherished wilderness areas -- paddle, swim, mountain bike, scramble, run, hike -- from Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana to Big Sur in No Cal. Choose your companions carefully. You need someone who'll buy the 1st round, at least. 2 guys? You get 2 rounds!
Great day of paddling Walloon Lake in northern Michigan this AM & mountain biking Boyne City School Forest Trails in the afternoon w/ my rugby brothers "Surfer John" Hearin & Chris "Piercey" Pierce. Now we're having a drink in one of Hemingway's old haunts in Petoskey.
Entering Minnesota's Boundary Waters to begin a two day wilderness trip. Nothing but the calling of loons to fall asleep by. A very cool vibe in that place.
Mountain bike ride along the Brule river in Wisconsin then a swim downriver from above the mouth of the river into Lake Superior. Pretty exciting as the Brule was moving fast & the wind will carry you down lake swiftly if you don't angle right in the channel & go upwind.
Chillin' after a long paddle into Minnesota's Boundary Waters. When we arrived at our remote campsite it was raining hard so we explored the entire lake since we were already soaked. Sun came up & we put up the tent & hammocks & had a bourbon.
Maah Daah Hey trail in North Dakota was the most challenging & fun mountain bike ride of the trip so far. Eight miles of knife-edge ridges, strong wind gusts, sheer dropoffs & the 1.5 mile winding downhill to finish, like a bobsled run thru the trees. Big rush!
After a great mountain bike ride @ Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota this morning we ran into President Roosevelt in town. I asked about his friend, trapper & US Army scout Luther "Yellowstone" Kelly, whose grave we visited in Billings MT, & he replied in character.
Riding the Rim Rocks in Billings Montana with Ryan Swan & Surfer John Hearin today. We visited Yellowstone Kelly's grave -- Civil War vet, trapper, cavalry scout, & Indian fighter; a laconic, well-read man who lived a long exciting life filled with wilderness adventures.
Biking & hiking the Rim Rocks in Billings Montana with my son Liam & neohew Owen. Great to have them along for this part of the trip. My good Montana rugby pals & my family in the coolest state in the union -- doesn't get any better than that.
Biking the Clark Fork river outside my.adopted hometown of Missoula Montana this morning, with my rugby pal "Surfer John" Hearin, a rocket scientist with a PhD.
