A single Asian hornet was reported and captured in Ireland on the 25th of April 2021. Nearly a year later and there have been no other confirmed sightings here, however it is important to remain vigilant.

It's that time of year again! As the weather begins to improve queen hornets will start to emerge from hibernation in search of sugary, high-energy foods and a suitable place to nest.

An excellent talk by Jacqueline Beggs @AucklandUni on the invasion and control of invasive Vespula species in New Zealand. NZ is in a very unique position, with a distinctive ecology that is disrupted by the presence of wasps.

Demotivation, reduction of productivity, distract from their main focus of taking care of bees - all issues beekeepers face in regions where the Asian hornet is well established.

Jaoa Casaca couldn't have said it any better, "It’s not a beekeeping problem, it is a problem for the beekeepers". Lots of talk about the role of beekeepers in controlling Asian hornets, and not enough discussion is given to the mental toll it takes on beekeepers.
