@mudman03@ClemensZauner@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate The context in which the elections are postponed is completely irrelevant. The fact that they are postponed aligns with power having few limits. Regardless of any constitution.
Zelensky is not the only government official. Most are good. Zelensky will tell you: Not all are.
@mudman03@ClemensZauner@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate No, you posting that there can't be elections during war is the thing that amplifies it. No one is arguing Russia should not withdraw from Ukraine. You're projecting a position virtually no one has in western society.
@ClemensZauner@mudman03@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate Yet we do not learn from the experience where dictators rise to power? Obviously there is a balance. Ukraine is currently tipped in the direction away from democracy. That should be on people's minds as the war continues. Wars may last decades...
@mudman03@ClemensZauner@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate Did I say there isn't a war going on or something? Do you not, at least in the slightest, recognize that Ukraine is at risk of corruption and it is this very thing you are posting that amplifies it?
@IMaluzynsky@GerhardMack1@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate I give credit to Zelensky for attacking corruption. It is how he won his election.
Any corruption Trump might be guilty of is within the confines of the U.S. constitution. It is no doubt, the most resilient constitution on Earth against corruption.
@stranger_five@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate Car accidents kill more civilians than war kill in Ukraine currently. People still go to grocery stores, school, and work. The majority of Ukraine is normal life. Yes, Donbas won't be holding elections in the current state. But they still had elections when Crimea was occupied.
@ClemensZauner@mudman03@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate And "A dictator is not defined by whether he is elected or not. Take North Korea. They do have elections there."
Exactly the point I'm making. Democracies with elections still have a door open to dictatorships, and Ukraine has a foot in that door right now.
@ClemensZauner@mudman03@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate Right, so does Russia.
Ukraine has term limits. At least consecutive term limits, anyway. The reasons for those terms limits aren't stylistic. They prevent abuse of power. And that is not an issue Ukraine is foreign to.
@sonabilis@GerhardMack1@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate One doesn't need to hope if their constitution has the proper controls to prevent it. It so happens that Ukraine has a loophole that makes hope a critical factor and that factor amplifies with each passing year.
@wirbelsturm13@mudman03@ClemensZauner@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate Because they have nothing to do with U.S. policy. The U.S. has strict protections against it that other nations have. So I'm not applying U.S. policy, I'm contrasting it. I used Hitler's rise to power as an example, you glossed over it. Enabling Act allowed him to seize control.
@wirbelsturm13@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate It was a global crisis that was brought on by a world war that ended, shifting the economic parameters of all of western society.
It doesn't matter what justification there is, the fact is these sort of events commonly open a door to corruption of power. That is indisputable.
@wirbelsturm13@ClemensZauner@mudman03@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate It's insane that people get this upset at me suggesting that protecting democracy might actually be something to even consider. I didn't say they shouldn't have postponed an election. I only said it needs to be on the back of their minds. No one is even talking about it.
@mudman03@ClemensZauner@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate I didn't, but he bares at least partial responsibility. He could direct parliament to stop dragging their feet. The fact is martial law is not really needed at the moment. Life in most of Ukraine is relatively normal now, outside Donbas.
@sonabilis@GerhardMack1@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate I don't see a lot of avenues where war puts an end to corruption. War is a massive opportunity for corruption. It has all the ingredients you need: A clear threat to safety, willingness to forgo rights for safety, a widespread tolerance to violence, and lot of money.
@stranger_five@tmb30000@BohuslavskaKate There are ways to have elections. We are finally at a point where the tide is turning from Russia gaining to Ukraine gaining, and they no longer have air superiority. It is at a minimum time to start talking about elections.
BTW, Zelensky would likely win. But remember...
