The column looked unused.

No C# reference.
No UI field.
No solution search result.
Deleting it looked like routine cleanup.
But in a mature .NET system, the codebase isn't necessarily the system boundary.

That column might still feed a stored procedure, SQL Agent job, report, export, integration or operational script outside the repository.

So the question isn't:

“Does the .NET application use this?”

It's:

“Does the business system still depend on this?”

A database column can quietly become an undocumented contract.

The mistake isn't deleting a column.

The mistake is assuming the application boundary ends at the solution file.

A useful modernization question isn't:

“How old is this .NET application?”

It is:

“What does the business have to do manually because it no longer trusts the software to handle it?”

That answer often gives me a better investigation queue than the framework version does. #DotNet #LegacyModernization

For legacy .NET systems, I prefer to start with evidence: what is the business already doing to compensate for the software?

A legacy .NET system can look “stable” because the business has quietly learned how to compensate for it.

Slow report? Run it later.
Process hangs? Restart it.
Missing workflow? Use Excel.
Fragile deployment? Wait for one developer.

Those workarounds are diagnostic evidence.

The verification step matters most:

Did users stop avoiding the report?
Did support stop restarting the process?
Did the spreadsheet become unnecessary?
Can another engineer deploy safely?

If the workaround remains, modernizing the code may not have fixed the business problem.
