It's fun to build fun things.
I made a newsletter to ramble and share the archive of amazing craft I've gathered.
Pretty please sign up it will make me really happy
@nichochar I don’t know if it has anything to do with talent, but I find the dialogue always being (effectively) “you shouldn’t have enjoyed coding. You should have enjoyed generating business value.”
Bro, I liked this job because I liked the work. Not just the outcome.
Software is increasingly treated as disposable in the AI era. Yet we spend half our waking lives looking at screens! We don’t want to spend that time with zombie products—monotonous, vacant, and uncared for. We want products with soul. 💜
I go deep on this in my talk from @lennysan's Summit: https://t.co/Fv5nNwSwcm
@kalin_t@mitchellh I share your optimism, but I'm a little worried that the way they're being used is reducing drive instead of increasing it - do you have any thoughts on that? What do you think needs to change to inspire that drive again?
@mitchellh The comments on this are interesting, and almost points to the real core of "some people seem to not care that anything becomes good, only that it becomes acceptable"
I think the main change I observe from AI is that these cohorts of people are less and less aligned
Reject non-understanding.
Slop grenades are not just code and PRs. We run a real risk that *reading* gets entirely discounted, because of the exhaustion of getting low-quality and unverified AI prose being thrown at you all the time.
There's a thread going viral about a 'perf improvement' attributed to a compiler change. The PR *description* itself has the AI telling this person it's *not* due to the compiler change, it's how the algorithms and data structures have changed. And the implication is that a similar win could have been attained otherwise.
I want AI in the service of understanding the universe and enhancing human cognition and creativity.
~1 week into the new approach and it's kinda working.
I tend to use social media on my laptop and making the content "boring, but accessible" has been a decent play
I'm wondering how to extend the ideology into other things, but for now will keep monitoring
For the curious - my thesis now is that I need to build something that makes content boring, but not annoying.
When I made social media too annoying to use, a 3am version of me would just turn off the blocker.
Current approach is an extension that makes media greyed + blurred until I hover over it. Intent is that I (1) have to read, (2) can still access everything, but (3) have to read something that would motivate me to "discover" the media.
The only software that will matter in the future is the software with an opinion.
AI will make functionality incredibly cheap. Anyone will be able to build another app, replicate another feature, or generate another interface within minutes.
The only thing that remains is taste, philosophy, and conviction.
Opinionated software is built on deliberate choices, by a team with strong principles and the freedom to disappoint some people to serve others exceptionally well.
As the cost of building software approaches zero, the value of deciding *what* deserves to exist will only increase.
Life update: I joined @meetgranola as a product designer!
3 weeks in and I'm already having fun tweaking our product and shipping new features. The team's energy for experimenting and polishing has been contagious. Excited for what I'll be working on with this team ✨
