SHADOW WARTHOGS HOME FROM IRAN — Exclusive Nose Art Drop at Moody AFB

These A-10C Thunderbolt IIs just rolled back onto the flight line at Moody AFB after flying combat operations in support of some very sensitive work over Iran.

A follower trusted me with these exclusive shots straight from the ramp. For obvious OPSEC reasons I’m not going any deeper on the missions, the units, or the timelines, but the jets themselves are talking loud and clear.

These aren’t just morale paint jobs. Look at the rows of mission tallies and ordnance marks along the fuselages, every single one represents a real sortie into contested airspace. Did you guys catch the two boats??

One of these Warthogs was directly involved in the combat recovery of an F-15 pilot and weapons officer who went down over Iran. In the background of the shots you can see the F-15 tail with the words “That Others May Live”, the sacred motto of the rescue forces. When the call came, the A-10 answered. Close air support, on-station protection, and the quiet work of bringing our people home.

This is the side of airpower that stays in the gray. No fanfare. No press releases. Just lethal, ugly, beautiful Warthogs doing what they were built to do, and then disappearing back into the shadows until the next time they’re needed.

Huge respect to the crews who flew these jets home and to the follower who shared them with me.

Today marks the 46th Anniversary of our attempts to rescue 53 American hostages from the Embassy in Tehran. We tried, but the odds were stacked against us. The details are in my book, but today, I ask you to remember the fallen, the eight brave men we lost during that mission.
Recently, Mike Ritland @MRitland asked me if there’s a quote that has significance for me. I paraphrased one from Ernest Hemingway: “It’s said that a warrior dies two deaths, the first on the battlefield, the second the last time their name is spoken.”
I’m honored to say their names.
1st SOW Air Force personnel that was killed:  MAJ Richard L. Bakke, age 34, Long Beach, CA, MAJ Harold L. “Hal” Lewis, Jr., age 35, Mansfield, CT, MAJ Lyn D. McIntosh, age 33, Valdosta, GA, CAPT Charles T. McMillan II, age 28, Corrytown, TN, and Tech. Sgt. Joel C. People have no earthly clue of the gravity of the post below. Probably one of the best all time. A literal interaction with legendary living history.

The Sergeant Major was involved in one of the worst situations in U.S. military history and is alive to tell about it.

Operation Eagle Claw aka “Desert One” was the calamity that led to serious reforms across the joint force.

But the most telling part of the post below is his involvement with “White Element”. Meaning that he and his crew were the tip of the spear.

Long story short, President Carter ordered the raid to rescue the hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran after the Islamic regime took over.

SGM Vining being on the White Element means that in no uncertain terms, the President of the United States of America acknowledged he and his team were the most elite warriors on the planet and were entrusted with the most dangerous mission imaginable.

Carter needed a miracle. But the joint force as a whole wasn’t ready. I have no words to assuage the anguish of those lost during Eagle Claw. All I can say is that we learn as Americans. We try not to make the same mistake twice.

So, Sergeant Major, rest assured that a flawless raid in the middle of the night to capture Maduro would never have been possible without your pioneering efforts.

We all can’t wait for your book to come out so we can know more.
