I had a bank account I had stopped using completely after Covid get closed because Google kept attempting to draw the same payment. The payment would get rejected, but I’d also get a $35 fee. Never got any alerts or emails even before they closed the account. I had opted out of every possible overdraft protection that you’re allowed to opt out of. Months later I get a call from a debt collector saying the account was closed and I owe $500 from the fees that stacked up.

The big problems with speed cameras are:

1. They only enforce speed in one spot, so people who know it’s there just slow down to avoid getting ticketed, which can cause traffic issues, and most people who end up getting ticketed are just people who didn’t know was there. Doesn’t really keep people from speeding in general.

2. Usually they are enforced like parking tickets: no court date, doesn’t matter who was driving, which makes them difficult to contest them like you could for a real speeding ticket

3. Sometimes it takes a super long time for them to notify the driver that the received a ticket. Someone could start a new job and think they are driving within the threshold that they don’t ticket for, and then by the time they get their first ticket, they could have 20 more on the way

4. Sometimes a large portion of the ticket revenue is just going straight to whatever out of state unaccountable private company is doing the processing instead of staying in the community.

I mean frankly it shouldn’t be. This all started because communities were protesting their city council is doing really shady shit, and giving huge tax breaks in these deals and not doing enough to consider the effects on the community. That’s a local issue. The fact that it ballooned into a generalized anti-data center sentiment across the country is kind of a problem
