Forty thousand elephants were shot on the strength of one young biologist's research, and the land they were blamed for killing carried on dying anyway. Everything worth knowing about cattle and grass comes out of what he did next.

Allan Savory was a game ranger in what was then Northern Rhodesia in the 1950s, and he was very good at it. He watched land inside the reserves turning to bare ground and scrub, and he applied the logic everybody still applies. There was no livestock on it. Something was eating it to death. The only large herbivore left standing was the elephant.

So he made the case, properly, with data. A commission of scientists examined his work and agreed with him.

The culling was done by family group, because elephants will not leave a wounded relative, so you take the whole unit at once or you leave something behind that never recovers. That is the accepted method. It was carried out across years.

The desertification continued. It is continuing now.

His own words: the saddest and greatest blunder of my life, and he will carry it to his grave.

What saves this from being only a tragedy is that he refused to file it as one. He went looking for the actual mechanism and found the first piece of it in a farming magazine on somebody's coffee table, an article by a South African botanist called John Acocks, who had spent years watching Karoo desert scrub swallow what had been grassland.

Acocks had concluded something that reads like a misprint. The land was overgrazed and understocked at the same time.

Because overgrazing is not a headcount. It is a single plant being bitten again before it has recovered. Fifty animals loose on a hillside for a year will destroy it, drifting back to the same regrowing shoots week after week. A thousand animals packed tight on that hillside for two days and then gone for six months will build it.

Grass never evolved alongside solitude. It evolved with vast herds bunched hard by pack-hunting predators, moving constantly because standing still got you eaten, hammering dung, urine and dead growth into the soil surface and then vanishing for months. Take the herd away entirely and the ground does not rest. In a seasonal climate the old growth oxidises where it stands, grey and choking, the plant smothers itself, the soil caps over and the rain runs off it.

Rest is not the absence of damage. Rest is a different damage, and it was the one nobody was looking for.

Savory spent the rest of his life on that. Farmer, then a Member of Parliament opposing Ian Smith, then exile in 1979, then decades in America teaching men with cattle to plan grazing by time rather than by numbers.

Now look at what is being proposed in Britain in 2026.

Take the sheep off the fells. Cut the national herd. Rewild 30 per cent of the country. Pay a hill farmer £102 a hectare to remove his stock for eight months and £35 to graze it. Every serious institution in the land is lined up behind the same instruction, backed by data, checked by scientists, and delivered by people who have looked at degraded ground and concluded that the animal on it must be the reason.

That is the same conclusion, reached the same way, by the same kind of committee.

Savory has spent sixty years telling anyone who will listen what it cost to be that certain, and the men holding the maps have decided he is the one who does not understand ecology.

A scientist in Japan demonstrated that the air inside a forest strengthens your immune system for a full month

The study is incredibly fascinating:

Qing Li, an immunologist at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, took 12 men on a 3-day forest trip. These were slow walks with no breathing exercises and no set route.

Then he tested their blood and found a surge in natural killer cells -- the immune cells your body uses to fight cancer and virus-infected cells.

Remarkably, the effect didn't fade when they went home, it was still measurable 30 days later.

A control group that walked the same distance through a city showed no change at all.

Pine, cedar, and cypress trees release compounds called phytoncides to defend themselves from insects and bacteria. You breathe them in, and Li believes they switch your immune cells into high gear.

He estimates one forest walk a month may be enough to keep those cells elevated all year.

The best medicine might not even need a prescription -- just a walk among the trees.

Nobody said a word for twenty years.

Cereal for breakfast, from a box with a cartoon tiger on it. Perfectly normal. Part of a balanced breakfast, it said so on the side.

Sandwich, crisps, fizzy drink, five days a week at a desk. Nobody rang anybody.

Chocolate bar at eleven. Another at three. Colleagues watched this happen daily and said nothing, because they were doing it too.

Takeaway on the Friday. Second takeaway on the Saturday. My mother, who now worries about my kidneys, once brought the second one to the door herself.
