Sports in Kansas ⚾️ 3A Players of the Year: Seth Stover, Columbus & Brady Hunt, Wichita Collegiate

A tie in the voting here as it’s hard to argue with either’s body of work this season as the top players in 3A this season. Stover, a 6-foot-6 senior for the Titans, was impressive on both the mound and at the plate as anyone in the state this year when looking at an overall body of work of a two-way player. Offensively, he hit .397 with 15 extra base hits – 7 doubles and 8 home runs in the toughest 3A and below league in the state, which also featured 2-1A champion Colgan who had a losing record in the loaded league. He logged 26 RBI, 32 runs scored, was walked 12 times and hit by pitch 8. On the mound, Stover went 7-1 with a 1.47 ERA in 57 innings pitched. He was undefeated against Kansas competition and picked up the pitching win in the first round of the state tournament for the second consecutive year. He gave up just 12 earned runs all season and struck out 56. Stover was also last season’s SIK 3A Pitcher of the Year but was just as impressive on offense this season. Stover, who throws in the high 80s, now looks towards the MIAA as he’ll play collegiately at Emporia State next season. 

Hunt saved the best for last as his grand slam home run gave the Spartans the state title in comeback fashion over Columbus. While he would’ve been in POY consideration regardless of the hit, it’s the hit that solidified it. With just that hit in the championship game, it was the biggest hit of his life that propelled WCS to a 6-4 victory after trailing the entire game. He was big-time all-season hitting .500 for the Spartans on the way to winning back-to-back state titles. Hunt had 10 doubles and five home runs this season as he earned AVCTL-4 Player of the Year. He will play at Cloud County Community College next season. Wichita Collegiate also split with 4A champion, McPherson, this season, playing a very solid schedule against 4A and 3A competition. Hunt also caught both pitchers of the year this season in Hayden Malaise and Brett Black, who had back to back incredible years for the repeat champions. You can’t ask for a much better finish to a high school career than what Brady Hunt just did this year.
