🎉 On 1 Sept 2025, the ICGLR Secretariat hosted a meeting in Bujumbura 🇧🇮 with Kenya’s PS for Youth Affairs & Creative Economy, Mr. Jacob Fikirini @fikirini_jacobs 🇰🇪. This marked a major step for youth empowerment in the Great Lakes Region.
✍️ A key milestone was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the ICGLR Secretariat & the Republic of Kenya, formalizing the operationalization of the Regional Youth Forum Secretariat. This ensures structured collaboration and a clear framework to advance youth initiatives across Member States.
📝 Another landmark moment was the signing of staff appointment letters, officially operationalizing the Secretariat. We are thrilled to congratulate Dr. Francis Kinyua Nderitu, appointed as interim Regional Coordinator, whose leadership will be crucial in driving the Forum’s work.
🌍 ICGLR & Kenya reaffirm their commitment to youth engagement, regional cooperation, and creating opportunities for young people across the Great Lakes Region. The Forum Secretariat is now fully operational & ready to make an impact!
The Principal Secretary, State Department for Youth Affairs, Mr. Fikirini Jacobs Katoi Kahindi, today paid a courtesy call to the Kenya Embassy in Bujumbura. He was warmly received by Mr. Moses Mwenda, First Secretary and Acting Chargé d’Affaires.
During the visit, the PS was briefed on the history of the Mission and Kenya’s active role in the Great Lakes region. He expressed his appreciation that the Embassy is one of only two Missions accredited to the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), underscoring its strategic importance.
Mr. Jacobs reaffirmed Kenya’s strong commitment to advancing the ICGLR Youth Secretariat, hosted in Nairobi, and emphasized the Government’s dedication to ensuring its full operationalization.
The PS is in Burundi on an official working visit to the ICGLR Secretariat Headquarters, where he will engage in technical discussions on the Operationalisation of the Youth Forum Secretariat being headquartered in Nairobi.He was accompanied by Dr.Francis K.Nderitu,the Regional Coordinator of the Youth Forum Secretariat.
