The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport today officially launched the reviewed Kenya Road Design and Specifications Manuals, marking the release of Kenya’s second-generation road manuals since independence.
Developed to address evolving challenges in road and bridge design, planning, construction, and maintenance, the manual integrates innovations, climate change considerations, as well as present and future infrastructure needs.
This reviewed and updated Manuals will address the long-standing gaps in road construction by incorporating best practices in climate adaptation and modern best practices in technology to align the country’s infrastructure with both the national and international standards.
The Manuals, further, represent more than just technical documents: They are strategic instruments for transforming road infrastructure in Kenya.
In attendance during the launch included the Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, Director Generals from KeNHA, KURA, KeRRA, and KRB along with key stakeholders from professional engineering institutions including IEK, ACEK, KEBS, and the Academia.

Earlier today, AAK in collaboration with the Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN)@GBPN_org, participated in the Sustainable Construction for Africa Conference 2025 held at the Grand Argyle Hotel in Nairobi. Our involvement was part of the ongoing efforts to develop the Decarbonization Roadmap for Buildings and Construction - Kenya, following an invitation from Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST)@MeruUniversity.
The conference convened participants from across the continent and featured presentations on a range of topics on gaps in cement standards across Africa, decarbonization technology pathways, strategies for reducing carbon emissions, low-carbon concrete housing in Nairobi, greenhouse gas emissions from road infrastructure, and the role of green public procurement in promoting low-carbon construction materials.
The event also featured a panel discussion focused on advancing sustainable construction in Africa by establishing effective standards, policies and regulations. The Project Manager, Arch. Mumbua Musyimi, delivered a keynote presentation on the situational analysis of the buildings and construction sector for the decarbonization roadmap, outlining the key stages of the roadmap’s development and offering insights into sectoral trends, housing demand, emissions data, the carbon footprint of construction materials, the policy, regulatory and institutional landscape, urbanization challenges, and preliminary findings from the working groups based on ongoing baseline assessments.

PRESS RELEASE: THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION OF KENYA’S STATEMENT ON THE COLLAPSED BOUNDARY WALL AT AN ACTIVE CONSTRUCTION SITE ALONG SUSWA ROAD, PARKLANDS
🕯️ AAK mourns the tragic loss of two lives on 11th May 2025 at an active construction site located along Suswa Road in Parklands. Following an independent site inspection, AAK’s Mulika Mjengo site visit team discovered that multiple safety violations and poor construction methodologies were the cause of the collapse of the boundary wall.
⚠️ This mirrors earlier collapses in Kisii and Mombasa counties, witnessed in the last month, pointing to endemic and systemic neglect of safe construction practices.
🚧 Consequently, we recommend urgent corrective action and stricter enforcement of building regulations to avert further property damage and loss of life.
