There’s a Nepalese man on the news crying because he has lost his family in these terrible floods.

He says the floods were 10 times worse than even the worst floods they’ve ever seen.

I know people get irritated with people like me going on about climate change, but these are the stakes.

A lot of people are going to die, potentially millions, at worst billions.

I just can’t understand why the media and politicians cannot reflect what the scientists are telling us about the urgency of this moment.

Dolly Parton died yesterday at 80.

In America, her name needs almost no introduction.

In Japan, apparently it does.

One major Japanese TV headline this morning introduced her as the woman who created “I Will Always Love You,” the song most Japanese probably know through Whitney Houston.

Dolly wasn’t Catholic, but Christianity was deeply woven into her life. She grew up in church, spoke openly about God, and never hid her faith.

That kind of public Christian identity is something we see remarkably little of in Japan.

May she rest in peace.
