Use the term Hawaii residents — not Hawaiians — for the overall population of Hawaii.
Use the term Hawaiian or Hawaiians only for members of the ethnic group indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands. They also may be called Native Hawaiians or Hawaii's Indigenous people.
@GabiHhuerta Thank you for commenting in solidarity, it sucks every time, for all of us, to learn about spaces and practices that we will never get to know the same!
I am shaking with rage. The whole west side of Oʻahu was SAND DUNES. Burials, ʻiwi. It all was mined out to make pretty beaches. You cannot look it up on google, this only comes from kūpuna who watched it dissapear and who fought the bulldozers.
I have an added responsibility AT THE VERY LEAST to listen and learn from Black folks and folks with brown skin, and treat my relatives better because all the systems that privilege whiteness does not want me to. Anything less is to enforce white supremacy.
I am kanaka, very much white passing.I benefit from white supremacy, while black and brown skinned relatives are dehumanized. We can connect on our indigenous identity and still, I will never be able to relate to or fully understand their ongoing experiences of anti-blackness

Nani’s trouble with getting and keeping a job isn’t just because Stitch and Lilo keep causing mayhem, it’s also because of how she’s perceived based on her looks
This is the subtext that exists for those who’ve not had the lived experiences to make that more overt and obvious
@leeanabee I wonder if folks can’t talk about this with friends and elders in the community, off camera. Why was this the first and only place they went to express and defend their opinion? This could have been squashed in person by real conversation. This hurts in many ways.
