🌌Under the Northern Lights — A SmartBoom short story🌌
They had always been good at unexpected trips.
It wouldn’t be the first time one of them had dragged the other somewhere without much explanation, although this time there was one difference: neither of them had ever been there before.
Boom looked out the window, watching the unfamiliar landscape pass by.
“How did you even come up with this plan?” he asked Smart. “This isn’t exactly our usual kind of trip.”
Smart smiled.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about our daughters.”
The answer made Boom turn away from the window.
“They’re always on my mind,” Smart continued. “And I thought this could be a way for us to be together while we wait for the day when we can do it publicly again.”
For a few seconds, neither of them said anything.
They didn’t need to explain who they were.
“So…” Boom glanced at him. “The northern lights.”
“The northern lights,” Smart confirmed.
“From what I read, there’s only a thirty percent chance of seeing them.”
“I know.”
“And you brought me all the way here for a thirty percent chance?”
A small smile appeared on Smart’s face.
“We’ve done crazier things for much smaller chances.”
Boom couldn’t help but laugh.
“That’s true.”
“Besides, seeing them would be wonderful, but I think coming here already matters,” Smart said. “And if they don’t appear tonight… we’ll have a reason to come back and try again.”
He paused before adding, much more quietly,
“I guess we’ve gotten pretty good at that… at continuing to try.”
This time, neither of them smiled.
Boom lowered his gaze.
“They’ll never know how much we’ve done…”
“I think they do,” Smart replied.
“They don’t know even half of it.”
“They don’t need to know every detail. They know enough.” Smart looked at him. “That’s why they’re still with us after all this time. You said it yourself: our hearts are connected. They can’t separate us from them.”
Boom remained silent for a moment.
“They can feel our love,” Smart added.
“I know…” Boom finally murmured. “I just don’t like seeing them suffer. I want them to be happy. I can’t help worrying about them.”
“I know.”
And perhaps that was why they were there.
Because seeing the northern lights was, in itself, a small act of faith.
So many things had to come together: the time of year, the hour, the darkness, clear skies, the right location, and enough solar activity.
Everything had to align.
And even if you did absolutely everything right, no one could promise they would appear.
Maybe that was what made them so special.
A kind of natural magic that never repeated itself in exactly the same way. Something that had fascinated people for centuries and that, beneath an endless sky, could make you feel incredibly small and extraordinarily lucky at the same time.
They waited.
Until the sky began to change.
At first, it was barely a trace.
Then, light.
“Look…” Boom whispered.
Nothing else needed to be said.
For a few moments, they simply watched the sky.
“Don’t you think it’s beautiful?” Smart finally asked.
“The aurora?” Boom replied.
Smart shook his head.
“This family reunion.”
Boom’s laugh was soft.
“Although, if you think about it, it’s even more beautiful than that,” Smart continued. “We’re here, beside the North Star, seeing our daughters after more than a year…”
Then he turned toward Boom and met his gaze.
“And we still have each other.”
This time, the silence felt different.
Warm.
Safe.
Boom smiled.
“Yes…” he replied. “Experiencing this with you is beautiful. Unique. Special.”
He turned his eyes back toward the lights dancing above them.
“Fate, maybe?”
Smart didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, beneath that endless sky, his hand quietly searched for Boom’s.
Boom let their fingers intertwine.
And perhaps that was already an answer....
