in 2012, Felix Baumgartner rode a helium balloon 39 kilometers up — to the edge of space — and jumped. no engine, no wings, just a pressurized suit and gravity. what followed was the first human to break the sound barrier with his body.

> he rose for 2.5 hours in a balloon so thin it looked like plastic wrap
> in freefall he hit Mach 1.25 — over 1,357 km/h — with no vehicle around him
> he entered a flat spin that almost killed him, then stabilized and landed safely 4 minutes later

fun fact: 8 million people watched it live on YouTube — the biggest live stream in history at the time. the world literally stopped to watch one man fall.
