Hany Ramzy was the last Christian player on Egypt’s national soccer team.
After he was seen making the sign of the cross following a goal for Egypt, an unofficial decision was made to exclude Christian players from the national team.
Although Christians make up an estimated 10–15% of Egypt’s population, they are banned from senior government positions and many other areas of public life.

Muslim Egyptian walks into a Coptic shop declares the owner an “infidel”, and a “Jew”. All while sitting in the Coptic man’s store refusing to leave, confident that he will face 0 consequences in the Arab Republic of Egypt 🇪🇬
In Egypt, football is everything, unless you’re Christian. Talented Coptic kids are blocked from clubs, the national team, and even the Olympics simply because of their faith. It’s becoming harder to ignore. No athlete should be excluded because of their beliefs.

I was in this very church in August 2024 and met with HG Bishop Sarabamon in Port Sudan and thousands of refugees. Sadly, the dire situation in Sudan where up to 12 million are experiencing famine is off the radar, let alone the predicament of Sudan’s ancient Coptic Community.
#Sudan is the world's largest displacement crisis. According to @UNICEF, 90% of Sudan's 19 million school-age children now have no access to formal education. Those children are also exposed to increased risk of sexual violence and exploitation.
