Ireland’s Childcare Crisis

A few facts:

Between 2020 and 2025, more than €8 billion was allocated to the Department of Children.

Most of this money went towards migrant hotels that operate at 50%+ profit margin.

Companies linked to Séamus “Banty” McEnaney and his family have reportedly received more than €300million.

Since 2016, Ireland’s last three Ministers for Children have not had children themselves.

The Govt promised to reduce full-time childcare fees to approximately €200 per month. Delivering that commitment is estimated to require an additional €300 to €500 million per year.

Ireland currently allocates approximately:

€1.5 billion a year to childcare

Which is half the amount, €3 billion, they allocate to asylum, refugee and Ukrainian-related accommodation and supports

Normal people have no idea how badly our finances are being run.

From the below report it seems RTÉ, Ireland’s state broadcaster, and Children’s Books Ireland (a state-funded national charity) are actively promoting the 'Read with Pride 2026' guide to children and teenagers as young as 15. One of the books they recommend, 'What’s the T?', contains explicit, step-by-step instructions on how to perform anal sex, including advice on lubrication, douching, and other sexual acts. Let me be crystal clear about what this actually means under Irish law. The age of consent in Ireland is 17. Full stop. Under Section 17 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017, it is a criminal offence for any person to engage in a 'sexual act' with a child under 17. 'Sexual act' is explicitly defined to include anal penetration. Consent is completely irrelevant. A 15-year-old cannot legally consent to any sexual activity – vaginal, oral or anal. If the act takes place, the older person is committing the offence of defilement of a child / sexual act with a child. There is a very narrow “close-in-age” defence only if the accused is less than two years older than the 15-year-old and the relationship is not exploitative. Anyone older than that has no legal defence. In plain English: if a 15-year-old follows the instructions in the book RTÉ & Children’s Books Ireland are pushing, & has anal sex with someone outside that tiny exemption, the person having sex with them is committing a serious criminal offence; what the public rightly calls statutory rape. This is not 'inclusion. This is not 'education'. This is state-linked & funded organisations normalising & providing how-to guidance on sexual acts that are *illegal* when carried out with children under 17. If it's not technically grooming, it's its next door neighbour. Taxpayers and TV Licence payers are funding this. RTÉ is broadcasting it. Children’s Books Ireland, which receives public money, is publishing the list. The Government cannot pretend this has nothing to do with them. When the state broadcaster and a state-funded body promote material that, if acted upon by its stated target audience, minors, would involve the commission of a sexual offence against that minor, it is a matter of the utmost public concern. Parents have a right to know. The Oireachtas has a duty to act. And the Minister responsible cannot simply shrug and say “parents should decide”. This has to stop. Defend the innocence of our children.

The government has not lost its mandate. The electorate was actually very clear in what it wants, as always. The problem is that this government has made a very conscious effort not to act on that mandate. This is far worse than losing a mandate and is a complete affront to democracy.

I was out in Foynes today for the fuel protest that finished at 1pm, and I just wanted to share a few thoughts.

It was a very peaceful gathering with a really strong sense of community. I even bumped into a few relatives out there 🥰

I know there’s been some disruption and frustration around the protests in Limerick, and I completely understand the impact that’s had on people. But what I saw today were ordinary, decent people who are genuinely at their wits’ end — people who feel under real pressure from both national and international issues that are affecting their daily lives.

As public representatives and community leaders, it’s our responsibility to listen. We might not be able to fix everything overnight, but we have a duty to do what we can, using whatever influence we have, to help people live better, safer, and healthier lives.

Today was a reminder for me of just how important that is.

This is a very common misnonmer. The tax/levies....exceed the total cost of the product. On standard goods VAT is 23% of the sales price. Applying this standard approach to taxation (CGT 33%....), the tax on fuel is ~120%. It exceeds the total sales price of the product and more than doubles it. @dreoinlinehan @Nick_Delehanty

@fiannafailparty Protest is one of the most fundamental parts of a healthy democracy. But it only works when elected representatives engage and listen. FF has not engaged at all and is acting in extremely bad faith.
