Everyone is rightfully talking about Tadej Pogačar after today's epic performance, but it would be a sin not to commemorate this trio, because what Richard Carapaz, Lenny Martinez and Sepp Kuss did for 10 kilometres on Alpe d’Huez among 300,000 spectators was one of the best half-hour segments of cycling in the current decade racing-wise. They brought out my 12-year-old self who marvelled at the world when he started watching cycling, and after a very long time they managed to make me step out of my analyst role and simply enjoy the entire climb to Alpe d'Huez. For me, and for many others, they won fans for themselves (not that I didn’t already like them before… :))

Your Sunday group ride is probably doing more for men’s mental health than most corporate wellness programmes & therapy combined.
Nobody calls it therapy.
That is why it works.
A group of men meet in a car park at 8am.
They insult & abuse each other’s equipment.
Argue about tyre pressure.
Pretend not to be cold.
Ride side by side for three hours.
And somewhere between the first climb and the coffee stop, actual life gets discussed.
The business that is struggling.
The parent who is sick.
The relationship that is falling apart.
The anxiety nobody mentioned in the office.
The fear of getting older.
There is no circle of chairs.
Nobody is asked to “share.”
No wellness consultant is taking notes.
They are just moving forward together.
A lot of men communicate better shoulder to shoulder than face to face.
Give them a difficult road, a shared destination and enough time, and the conversation eventually becomes honest.
Modern life has removed many of the places where this used to happen.
The factory floor.
The local club.
The pub where everyone knew your name.
The community organisation.
The football team you stopped playing for at 32.
Work replaced most of it.
Then remote work replaced the people at work.
Now a man can spend five days moving between a laptop, a car and a television without having one meaningful conversation.
We call this efficient.
It is also incredibly lonely!
Cycling accidentally solves part of the problem.
It creates routine.
Shared suffering.
Responsibility.
Belonging.
A reason to show up when you would rather stay in bed.
The group notices when you disappear.
They notice when you are unusually quiet.
They notice when you are riding badly.
They may not ask if you are okay in those exact words.
They might ask why “you’re glued to the road today”?
But the question is still there.
This is why local cycling clubs matter.
Not because the world needs more people chasing Strava segments.
Because adults need somewhere they are expected to appear.
Community is not a WhatsApp group.
It is someone noticing you were not there.
Protect your group ride.
Invite the rider who is drifting away.
Wait at the top of the climb.
The coffee stop might be doing more good than anyone realises.

"It's really nice to be winning bike races again" - @NPowless
I forget that most of the world wasn’t fully aware of the absolute cuckoo bananas circus that is CONCACAF, and I am so, so happy that they’re getting such an on-brand introduction to the madness with this World Cup.
🚨Zlatan Ibrahimovic on VAR after Croatia’s last-minute equaliser vs Portugal was ruled out:*
This referees are doing everything possible for Ronaldo to win the world cup but they will say Messi is the FIFA boy , This ball was never an Offside because the ball didn't touch the Croatia player , This is pure daylight robbery.
"The referee and VAR have just erased what should have been one of the greatest moments of this World Cup.”
"Let’s be clear: if you’re going to cancel a goal in the 90th minute, the evidence has to be beyond doubt. I’ve watched the incident multiple times, from every angle, and I still don’t see anything conclusive enough to overturn it.”
"If you’re in that VAR room for minutes, pausing, zooming, drawing lines to a shoulder, a boot, a heel… it’s not clear and obvious. And if it’s not clear, the goal must stand. That’s the whole point of VAR.”
"The referee has allowed technology to become the main character. But fans don’t fill stadiums or stay up late to watch a screen. They come for football — for drama, for emotion, for moments you remember forever.”
"Croatia showed real fight. They dug in, they scored late, they thought they’d earned a dramatic equaliser to keep their dream alive. Then one decision ripped it away, and that decision will be argued about for years.”
"This is why confidence in VAR is collapsing. It’s no longer fixing obvious mistakes. It’s hunting millimeters that nobody in the stadium can see with their own eyes. That’s not what football is supposed to be.”
"I feel for those Croatian players more than anything. You celebrate, you believe your World Cup is back on, and then it’s gone in seconds. For me, the referee on the pitch and VAR in the booth both got it wrong.
🚨🗣️ Luka Modrić on VAR and the penalty: “We deserved much more. Some things didn't go our way. If the situation had been reversed, VAR would NEVER have intervened.
I said from the beginning, when VAR was introduced, that I didn't like it. It's useful for some things, but it's being used incorrectly or selectively. VAR should only intervene if it's a 200% clear mistake.
Today's incident was NEVER a penalty. They were both holding each other and both fell. You can't decide a match like this with a penalty like that.
These things frustrate me because they decide people's fate. They affect your emotions after everything you sacrifice and fight for.
We have young players coming through, and then something like this happens. It hurts, especially because it always seems to go against us. Still, we won't use it as an excuse.”
Balogun was in on goal. He beat the defender and was about to score.
No red card. No penalty. No yellow card. No foul. No review.
The bizarre thing is that Fox Sports showed a replay that began just AFTER the defender let go of the arm. So weird. How could the officials miss this? And how could the TV crew miss it as well? @USMNT
Today, we remember a legend.
On this day in history, Harambe would have celebrated another birthday. An icon that became part of internet history, American culture, and an entire generation’s timeline.
Tomorrow marks 10 years since we lost him. Ten years since the moment the world stopped scrolling and collectively mourned something bigger than a meme.
He became a symbol of loyalty, strength, chaos, unity, and the strange beauty of the internet bringing millions of people together for one cause: never forgetting Harambe.
Everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. And somehow, a decade later, his legacy still lives on.
Gone, but never forgotten.
Rest easy to a true patriot. 🕊️🇺🇸
