Higher support needs made up the bulk of early on the ground advocacy. The face of autism advocacy should be those most marginalized because when we accept them, all autistic people will be accepted.

@KatyElphinstone yes my speech is unreliable and a lot of it when i do speak is vocal stimming or echolalia so i sometimes use AAC. often when using AAC people (or even when i am not) people will ignore me and talk to my support workers.

Why do I use AAC? I am a full time user.

AAC is augmentative and alternative communication.

Essentially communication that is not mouth words.

For me that means using technology like an iPad and eye gaze to communicate.

@disabledtudor i really liked this thread ! i relate to a lot of it. i have autism and tourettes, and am not diagnosed with schizophrenia but i experience psychosis and the related symptoms too

i actually was living with my grandparents when i got my diagnosis as a kid my gran handled it amazing & my grandpa struggled a bit which is ironic because he definitely had autism traits himself even if he would not have qualified for diagnosis especially in the era he was from

@crybabytacorat yes. my visual and sensory processing too overwhelming, i have tourettes which makes me move my hands, head & eyes, and i also have no sense of direction and get lost very easily, and would not able to concentrate on maps and driving at the same time.

@MeanderingPark i go in person with a support worker. support helps me get there & advocate for myself & remember/suggest things i might not. even if not a official support worker a support person of some kind can be helpful

I wonder how many autistic kids are sitting in special education classes with the fluorescent lights frying their brains. I did great in art class, I did great in music, because there were no fluorescent lights.
