Following our April 29 announcement, we believe it's important to be transparent about the context that led to the decision. We want to explain, where we can, why this was made on such short notice, only days before we were set to host RightsCon.

We condemn the Zambian government’s actions that led to the abrupt cancellation of #RightsCon. @Amnesty has joined 132 other organizations in denouncing the government’s last‑minute decision to postpone the conference at the eleventh hour.
The global digital rights event was due to take place in Lusaka and online from 5–8 May 2026 and would have marked the first time #RightsCon was held in Sub‑Saharan Africa.
The Zambian government justified its decision by citing the need for “comprehensive disclosures” to align with “national values” and “public‑interest considerations.” Yet no such disclosures were made public, undermining the credibility of this justification for such a drastic move.
This last‑minute reversal raises serious concerns about shrinking civic space, lack of transparency, and Zambia’s commitment to meaningful engagement with civil society and its international obligations.
