Their lawmakers are clearly well-educated in their field. This is why we should vote for people who actually studied law and know how the government works, instead of just choosing 'popular individuals.'
it’s 2 AM and south korea has seen the worst snow storms in 100 years recently. none of the civilians and assembly members have left the scene yet. they have stated that they will remain at the national assembly until the president officially declares the end of martial law.
mind you that this was able to happen because the people fought back and prevented the military & police from barricading the national assembly.
so don't ever tell me how resistance is futile.
“We must stay alert til the very end.
We haven’t forgotten how the previous regime promised to withdraw the military only to shoot at civilians to the sound of the national anthem playing at noon.”
many of us are living in countries suffering from the rise of fascism like sk and despite today’s attempt, i hope we all learned that WE have the power to change things and stop dangerous politicians from destroying our lives
It’s past 2am in Seoul. People aren’t leaving the National Assembly premise. They’re still outside. If anything, more have gathered. They are singing and waving flags in unison, doing chants that first started, “begone martial law!” which has changed to, “begone Yoon Suk Yeol!”
It took only ~2.5 hrs for the National Assembly to gather a majority of members (190 of 300) and generate a unanimous vote (190 of 190) to vote down the emergency martial law. The law says the president "shall comply" with parliament's vote, but doesn't specify a time frame.
guys martial law isn’t lifted in South Korea, but the votes were 190/300 in favor of nullifying it. the president, by law, has to lift it and it’s not lifted until he says it is. if he doesn’t, though, it is unlawful and he can be arrested or impeached. keep crossing your fingers, I’m sure it will be lifted soon.
to declare martial law solely to protect your own power, while masking it as a measure for the citizens' safety, is a betrayal of the highest order literally an unimaginable act of cruelty in this day and age. praying for the safety of everyone in south korea rn
A warning for the Philippines. One of our closest allies, South Korea, now under martial law — imposed by a president very irritated by impeachment attempts against him and investigations into his family. Uses communist threat to justify his declaration.
Local reports are still in shock tonight’s events. While they commend the South Korean people who were able to mobilize and protect the country so quickly, they also keep repeating that they couldn’t have imagined that this would have ever happened
An example for the Philippines.
This is an example of how checks and balances should work in a democratic country. Just because the head of state wants it, doesn’t meant the legislative chambers should follow.
truly the biggest props to every law maker that quite literally jumped over fences to nullify the president’s declaration good lord i pray he doesn’t get away with this
guys i wish i could put more emphasis on how important it is to be educated these days. don’t ignore something just bc it doesn’t affect you. read more, be smarter. everything in our lives involves politics, don’t run from it. don’t give fascism the upper hand, i’m begging you.
