that’s because they live among us, looking like normal people. the only real difference is they’re going to hell
The devastating thing about this line is that it’s technically the emotionally safer option to “understand” why Magnus chose him. Because if there isn’t a reason behind it, then there has to be acknowledgement that a horrific thing happened to him for no reason at all.
Being able to “understand” Magnus not only provides him with a semblance of control over his trauma (which he again relies on with the “I control the chaos,” line in regards to Gabi’s abuse) but it also provides some sense of order to the workings of the world.
With the repeated abuses he’s experienced, he either has to think that there’s a specific reason that he is “chosen” by his abusers, or that the world is a disorganized and chaotic place where hurt and pain are unpredictable and unpreventable.
A specific “reason” can be identified and controlled, but a senseless world of violence cannot. The fact that he’s arrived at this interpretation of his experiences is both devastating and completely understandable in the context of the mind’s attempts at self-protection and self-soothing.
Lestat de Lioncourt should be protected at all costs.
