What do you think children’s media should be responsible for?
Entertainment?
Education?
Character?
Identity?
Or should we expect all of them?
We’re listening. 👇
We worry about what our children eat.
We worry about the schools they attend.
We worry about the people they spend time with.
But when it comes to what they watch for hours every day…
“It’s just entertainment.”
Is it?
So maybe the question isn't:
“Is this content safe?”
Maybe we should also ask:
“What is this content helping my child become?”
Because children are always being formed.
The only question is:
By what?
This doesn’t mean every children’s story needs to become a sermon.
Children deserve to laugh.
To imagine.
To explore.
To be entertained.
But entertainment can still leave a child with something worth carrying.
And here’s the uncomfortable part:
We often give more thought to how long our children spend on screens than to what those screens are actually putting into them.
2 hours of what?
That question matters.
Children learn long before they can explain what they’ve learned.
They pick up language.
Attitudes.
Ideas about friendship.
Ideas about success.
Ideas about beauty.
Ideas about right and wrong.
Media is part of the environment raising them.
A child watches a character lie and get rewarded.
A character mocks everyone and becomes the funniest person.
A character solves every problem with violence.
A character gets everything they want without consequences.
They’re not just watching a story.
They’re watching behaviour.
Not everything online is meant for children, but they see it anyway.
