@madsssagascar@A_Kapustin Precisely. Marathon running champions are people who trained hard to become better than everyone at something that is not useful for anyone.
@skdh Here's a four-step trick I've learned from my prof:
1) Exceed journal's ref list length limit already at submission.
2) Add refs that reviewers insist on adding.
3) Paper gets accepted. Editor asks to shorten the list of refs to fit the limit.
4) Remove the refs added in step 2
Vernor Vinge — "Deepness in the Sky"
Vernor Vinge — "Fire upon the Deep"
Charles Stross — "Accelerando"
@frozenaesthetic Six years is too much. For instance, upon completion of their terms, all the Korean presidents stay in prison for much less than six years.
@BlackDirtRoad@frozenaesthetic All attempts to refute this will be futile: you'll simply redefine "cult", "belief", "system", "ideology", and "major". And "have". And maybe "humans".
It's "I'm 14 and this is deep" kind of situation.
@BrianMcDonaldIE@vsebudethorisho Can't help but think of a certain punk rock band officially banned by Putin's government. That band had a satirical song in which an orthodox christian grandma calls for execution of all astronauts because "they rip open the sky as if by a devil's horn"

@azrathetical@solisolsoli I don't remember this in Endless Nights. My guess would be the 1999 "Sandman: The Dream Hunters", since it was illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. But I don't have it, so can't say with certainty.
@martianwyrdlord You are literally describing how you've become the victim of the so-called "Myth of the Starship" (no relation to SpaceX).

@skdh The most sensitive I know are SSPD. A single-photon bolometer. A grid of superconducting nanowires kept very close to critical current and temperature. Absorbing one photon brings enough heat to push the wires out of superconducting regime, a switch that's easy to detect.
@A_Kapustin Это чудовищно упрощённая версия истории о выяснении структуры ДНК. Как называется эффект, когда мужчина срезает углы у истории так, что от скульптуры Венеры Милосской остаётся лишь уёбищный тетраэдр?
