This news did not break on Fleet Street. It did not come out of Kirkby, and it certainly did not come from the usual suspects spoon-fed by #LFC. The Florian Wirtz story started and ended where it mattered, in Germany. That is where the real temperature was taken. That is where the first credible flickers of truth emerged.

For close on three weeks now, the UK circuit has been chasing this story like it is in a foreign language. Because, in many ways, it was. Liverpool did not leak, did not brief, and did not need the noise. And so, while the headlines here were playing catch-up, the better clues came from the German side.

When Wirtz flew to Blackpool, I, like everyone else, still expected Bayern. I wrote about it on here. That was not guesswork. It was Liverpool-side info, credible and trusted. But within 24 hours, the tone changed. A German source came back to me. Told me not to be so sure. The next day, he told me the odds had flipped. From ten percent to ninety, just like that. The excitement you saw, as those in the @AnfieldIndex Discord community will attest, began around then was rooted in those conversations.

Roughly ten days ago, we were told the deal was agreed in principle. Structure set. Direction clear. The only sticking points were apparently those of currency and installments. Pounds or euros. Has that really been the small glitch holding back the final seal?

This was not a flashy swoop. It was a slow tightening of the rope around Bayern’s chances. No briefings, no pageantry. Just quiet conviction, methodical work, and a sense that Liverpool knew the pull of what they were offering.

There is a calm ruthlessness about how the club does business now. It frustrates some in the media, and occasionally confuses the fanbase. But when it clicks, it looks like this. The Bundesliga’s standout player, courted across Europe, heading to Anfield. Not because Liverpool shouted loudest, but because they knew what they were doing.

The money is big. Around £100 million guaranteed, add-ons on top, breaking the British transfer record. But it is not reckless. It is performance-linked and carefully structured. This is ambition with discipline.

Wirtz is more than a signing. He is a signal. To other players, to the dressing room, and to the market. It tells you Liverpool are still in the room. Still pulling power. Still planning for something serious.

This is not about who reported it first. It is about who moved smartest. And if this deal lands like we expect it to, Liverpool will have done what they do best.
