@kristenrudd You can probably find the whole thing on YouTube if you don't want to buy it.
Here are the first 8 hours for a taste.

@kristenrudd Listen to the audiobook. Either as you read, or as a reread of a previous chapter. Alternate between reading and listening if you want.
Richard Poe, the narrator, nails the tone & characters. It will improve your reading experience.
Not to say McCarthy is always perfect. Outer Dark should have been a novella, Orchard Keeper is just not worth reading, The Passenger has some bizarre writing decisions.
But all his characters are very human.
I understand finding McCarthy "overwrought" and "overstylized" but seeing nothing human in the first 100 pages of the Road (1/3 of the book) is insane.
Even the Judge and Glanton are more humanized than non-readers think, and Tobin is an unforgettable character.
I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.
NON-KANTIANS DO NOT READ
….
Okay, just us. We’ve gotta talk. It’s a BIG problem how many Iranian politicians are turning out to be nominal Kantians. I’m worried the heteronomist subhumans will try to use this against us and prevent the salvageable humans from being saved. What can we do?
Israel is now eliminating Kantians. Hegel couldn’t do it, Schelling couldn’t do it, Fichte couldn’t do it. Bibi Netanyahu is going to complete the system of German Idealism.
I am hearing that on his deathbed, Jürgen Habermas saw the light of Schmittian power politics and flawlessly recited the entirety of Der Begriff des Politischen. Even now he exists in a heavenly Ausnahmenzustand. Truly, the distinction between friend and enemy is existential!
At times, the joy that life attacks me with is unbearable and leads to gasping hysterical laughter. I find myself completely out of control and wonder how could life could surprise me again and again and again, so completely. How could a man be a cynic? It is a sin.
