I told my wife she was "just a housewife" during an argument.

Eleven years of marriage, and those words left my mouth like they'd been waiting in queue. She was asking why I never helped with school fees... why she had to chase me for money while I bought a new Benz for "business image."

"You don't even work," I said. "What do you know about pressure?"

She didn't cry. That's what killed me. She just looked at me... really looked... like she was memorizing my face for the last time. Then she walked into our bedroom and closed the door.

I went to work. Came back late, as usual. The house was dark. No dinner smell. No generator sound. Just silence.

I found a note on the kitchen table:

"I'm at my sister's. The children are with me. When you're ready to remember who held your mother's hand while she died, who sat up with you when you lost that case, who still wakes up at 5 AM to iron your shirts even though we have a house help... call me. Until then, enjoy your peace and quiet."

I sat in that dark house for three hours.

I called. She didn't pick up. I called again. Again. I drove to her sister's house at 11 PM... Lekki to Yaba, through traffic that didn't matter. I knocked until her sister opened the door, looking at me like I was the idiot I was.

"I need to apologize," I said.

My wife came to the door. Eleven years. I saw the girl who'd eaten roasted corn with me at Yaba market because we were both broke students. The girl who'd believed in me before anyone did.

"I'm sorry," I said, and my voice broke. "You're everything. I was angry at myself and I threw it at you. I'm so sorry."

She didn't say "it's okay." She said "come inside." That was harder. That meant I had work to do.

I still do that work. Every day.
