Defend Our Soup Kitchens!
Our councillors have been standing firm against the latest attempt to ban on-street soup kitchens.
On Monday, Cllr. Conor Reddy submitted an emergency motion to debate the planned restrictions on soup kitchens. Although the motion did not make it onto the agenda, the issue was debated extensively during the meeting.
Excuses for these restrictions ranged from accusations of low food quality to explicit calls for removal based purely on the kitchens’ appearance. At Monday’s protest, we heard countless stories from members of the public who highlighted the serious problems with food quality and nutrition in state services. Many explained how they are driven to on-street services, which are often significantly better.
This attempt to curtail the activities of volunteer-led soup runs has been met with widespread resistance. It’s yet another example of the state eroding or removing essential services without offering any plans for how remaining services will cope with the additional burden.
Our soup kitchens address a shameful gap in the state’s capacity to support those facing housing insecurity, homelessness, and deprivation. They need to be supported—not banned!
We will continue to fight these bylaws in the council and keep you updated on future ways to join the fight. Together, we can defend our soup kitchens and build the fight for an Ireland where soup kitchens are no longer necessary!
