Day 2 of the AVITHRAPID Consortium Meeting in Cagliari 🇮🇹

The second day of the AVITHRAPID Consortium Meeting featured presentations from WP2, WP4, WP5, WP6, WP7 and WP8, providing a comprehensive overview of the project’s scientific, technological and dissemination activities.

The discussions were both inspiring and encouraging. The results presented by the consortium further strengthened our confidence that AVITHRAPID is moving towards one of its most ambitious goals: developing a promising portfolio of broad-spectrum antiviral compounds to enhance preparedness against future viral threats.

Together, we continue advancing innovative antiviral research to strengthen Europe’s preparedness for future infectious disease threats.

Day 1 of the AVITHRAPID Consortium Meeting in Cagliari 🇮🇹

Today, partners from across Europe gathered in Cagliari for the first day of the AVITHRAPID Consortium Meeting. Over the next two days, the consortium will review progress, share the latest scientific and clinical achievements, and align on the next milestones in advancing innovative solutions for antiviral preparedness.

Following the coordinator's welcome, the meeting moved straight into the project's core activities. Partners presented the latest results from WP1 and WP2, highlighting recent achievements, ongoing work, and the next objectives. Beyond the presentations, meetings like these remind us of the true value of European collaboration. While online meetings keep our work moving forward, nothing compares to the energy, trust, and creativity that emerge when researchers meet face-to-face to exchange ideas and tackle challenges together.

A special thank you to Prof. Enzo Tramontano and his team at the University of Cagliari for their warm hospitality and for hosting this important consortium meeting in such an inspiring setting. The day will conclude with a consortium dinner in the beautiful city of Cagliari. Another opportunity to strengthen partnerships and build the relationships that drive successful collaborative research.

Hantavirus: Readiness is no longer an option - it is a necessity

The MV Hondius outbreak in May 2026 confirms an alarming reality: viral pressure is constant and unpredictable. With confirmed cases of Andes virus - the only hantavirus capable of human-to-human transmission - and multiple fatalities aboard the cruise ship, we face a stark reminder of our vulnerability.

While WHO assesses the current risk to the general population as low, we cannot afford complacency. The potential for viral spillover and sustained transmission represents a “point of no return” for global health security.

Why Avithrapid is essential today:

• No WHO-approved vaccine exists for any hantavirus strain
• Case fatality rates reach 50% in severe cases
• Current treatments are purely supportive - no specific antivirals available
