I don’t think anyone is saying this is literally Homer’s Odysseus.
You’re defending the original text, which is fair, but this is an adaptation. Adaptations reinterpret characters all the time, they’re not meant to replace the source material.
I actually agree that Homer’s Odysseus is driven by his desire to get back to Penelope, Telemachus, and Ithaca, and that the Sirens episode is about preparation and resisting temptation. But I don’t think exploring the emotional cost of the journey somehow means the writers “didnt read the text.”
To me, the film is asking a different question..after twenty years of war and loss, what does going home actually feel like? You don’t have to like the adaptation. But “I disagree” and “they didn’t read Homer” are two very different arguments!
Eurylochus: “What was the song of the Sirens like?”
Odysseus: “All the things you wanted to be, and then all the things you wished you never wished for. It was a delicious itch you want to scratch, but you find it under the skin and can’t reach it. So the delicious itch becomes unbearable. It told you what you most want is what you most can’t have, and that the most you can’t have is what you already had and lost. It was a song of all the promises I failed to keep. And it told me I don’t really want to go home.”
This whole scene is actually INSANE
The Sirens aren’t just tempting Odysseus with some beautiful song.
They’re showing him
every person he wanted to become, every desire he regrets,
every promise he broke, and
everything he had before the war that he can never get back.
“I don’t really want to go home” hits differently. He spent all those years trying to return to Ithaca, but actually reaching home means facing his wife, his son, all his failures, and the fact that he isn’t the same man who left.
He doesn’t only miss home. He misses who he was when home still felt like home.
And the way Nolan presents it? Odysseus tied down, completely helpless, while the Sirens drag every buried feeling out of him.
No unnecessary explanation,
No forced dialogue
just one man admitting the truth he has been running from.
Absolutely goated writing from the GOAT himself 🐐
