Happy New Year from us at the Audiovisual Technology Group at @TU_Ilmenau!
We're wishing everyone a year filled with innovation, collaboration, and groundbreaking discoveries in the world of audiovisual tech!

From AR headsets to telepresence robots (#COHUMANICS), our research highlights how innovative tech can bridge distances for older adults. Early results are promising, but there’s much more to explore in usability, joy, and accessibility! 🚀 #ThrowbackThursday#QoE
#ThrowbackThursday to when we co-authored studies on communication between grandparents and grandchildren! Face-to-face & phone chats still lead the way, while AR and robot tech show potential despite usability challenges. Non-digital tools often deliver richer experiences.
@ieee_ism Dominik analyzed the impact of #framerate|s on perceived video quality using #SAMVIQ, showed that higher frame rates improved quality, and provided open-source test software to support HFR research.

@ieee_ism Steve presented a new dataset of 1496 upscaled images evaluated for appeal, compared 5 methods (Real-ESRGAN, BSRGAN, waifu2x, KXNet, Lanczos), and developed models that detect methods and predict appeal.

On today's #ThrowbackThursday we dive into a book chapter about #videoquality assessment in immersive media, focusing on subjective testing with humans and objective metrics. It highlights the unique challenges of omnidirectional video.

Dominik’s latest paper explores how #8K compares to #4K at various viewing distances. Findings reveal that 8K’s quality advantage fades beyond 2.6H, where most viewers prefer to sit, limiting perceptual benefits.

#AI-generated images have come a long way! We analyzed realism and appeal of images from #DALLE, Midjourney, and Craiyon using 27 text prompts. Some produced realistic results, but it all depends on the approach and prompt.

Today's #ThrowbackThursday paper is the 'Qualinet White Paper on Definitions of Quality of Experience' (#QoE). At its time, it acted as a agreed upon base to quantify subjective quality. Researchers from 21 entities were participating in that process.

Within the 6G NeXt project, we met with academic partners and companies at Schönhagen airfield to conduct #6G measurements on intelligent drones, including the specially developed “Manta-X.” We'll create a 3D model of the airfield using photogrammetry and develop a QoS/QoE model.
Alex and Felix visited @cwi_dis for a meeting of the Immersive Media Group (IMG, part of #VQEG), where experts presented and discussed results and test methods for #immersive communication systems, contributing to the ongoing @ITU|-T work item P.IXC.
