POLICE, PARITY AND IDEOLOGICAL CAPTURE

Two people. Two attacks. Two very different experiences of policing.

My friend Steve James @judge148 was recently issued with a Dispersal Order by Greater Manchester Police, after being attacked by members of a Pride parade while peacefully counter-protesting. He was attacked by multiple people eg mobbed, whilst also surrounded by “pup-play boys” and other men with their sexual fetishes proudly on public display.

Steve was brought to the ground, his airway compressed in the process and had his property forcibly taken from him. Yet instead of being treated simply as the victim of an assault, he was told by police he was suspected of causing harassment, alarm and distress, presumably because of views he was expressing which are, in themselves, lawful and legally protected, not to mention biologically factual. Police asked him, as a matter of routine and whilst smirking, how he identified, in terms of gender.

I know something of what that feels like.

In Winsford, I was not protesting at all. I was checking on safeguarding compliance as a councillor, at an event in my own ward, where there had previously been breaches. That’s part of my role. I was publicly incited against from the stage, subsequently mobbed and physically attacked, including by a woman with a dildo and a man twice my size and weight, and yet I was the person arrested and detained. This was all captured on video.

I was held for 22 hours, the excuse given that they had to await video evidence.

The police took a statement from one of my attackers at the scene, before putting me in the police van. My counter-allegation was ignored. Witnesses to my counter allegations were also ignored by the same officers who had stood by and watched myself and my friends being openly mobbed.

I have subsequently obtained an MRI scan showing that a ligament in my thumb was detached - this happened during these attacks against me. Yet the police closed the investigation into these assaults and told me they had “timed out”.

I now have the recording of my police interview, in which I again reported the assaults. I reported them again, once the charges against me were dropped and within six months. The opportunity to investigate was there - it simply wasn’t pursued.

And that is why Steve’s experience concerns me so much.

The police are more interested in whether the victim’s views are ideologically acceptable than in establishing who actually assaulted whom. That’s wrong.

Peaceful protesters and local councillors are being treated as criminals and policed punitively, even when suffering un-provoked assault and injury, whilst those who attack them are treated as the victims.

I never even considered pleading guilty to the evidence-free, outrageous charges brought against me by the police. Their ONLY intent was to shut me up.

Lawful expression does not become less lawful because a police officer, a complainant, Labour councillors or a member of the public dislikes it.

This is bigger than either Steve’s case or mine. The only Culture War being fought is the one by our own government and public institutions against reality, decency and child safeguarding and against those of us defending those things. The young attacker in Steve’s case references his university lecturer and concepts of ‘hate speech’; the same concepts the young sergeant has been brainwashed into by his superiors and by the College of Policing.

That is a profoundly dangerous direction for a democracy.

I hope Steve’s case receives the scrutiny it deserves. I also intend to pursue my own case, including the failure to properly investigate the assaults against me and the apparent disparity in how the competing allegations were treated.

The police must police by the law, without fear or favour.

And the same rules must apply to everyone.
