On the margins of #UNGA81 in New York, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, @ymahmoudali, met with Ms. Amy Pope, Director General of @UNmigration, to exchange views on migration governance, the protection of migrants’ rights & legal pathways for migration.

The Chairperson underscored the importance of strengthening AU–IOM cooperation in advancing safe, orderly regular migration, while promoting the meaningful engagement of the African diaspora in the continent’s development & investment, including in skills development, knowledge transfer & the retention of critical capacities in Africa.

He highlighted the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (@AfCFTA ) in advancing regional economic integration, including facilitating the movement of labour & skills across the continent.

The Chairperson & Ms. Pope reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting the rights & dignity of migrants & to strengthening international cooperation on migration.

For two decades, the Migration Policy Framework for Africa (#MPFA) has guided Africa’s approach to migration governance. As we mark #MPFA20, the African Union is moving to establish a Migration Advisory Council (MAC) - bringing together Heads of Immigration from AU Member States and REC officials to provide strategic direction on border governance.

When African Heads of State Summit in 2015 adopted the Joint Labour Migration Programme (#JLMP), they set a bold vision: stronger labour migration policies, better protection for African migrant workers, improved data for smarter decisions, and solid programme governance, all aligned with the Labour Migration Policy Framework for Africa and Agenda 2063.

The second phase (Action & Lead projects, 2022–2025) delivered real results:

1. Development and adoption of national and regional labour migration policies, including in Cameroon and within the East African Community.

2. Creation of dedicated labour migration units in government institutions to boost coordination and management.

3. Improved quality labour migration data and statistics through development of Labour Market Information Systems in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Malawi etc…

4. Strengthened social protection frameworks; portability of benefits, migrant welfare systems, and tools like the JLMP Capacity-Building Manual on Migrant Welfare now used by Member States, and many more!

When I was booking our family beach vacation, I attempted to give the business to Kenyans in Kenya so as to support the local Jobs . I checked out with two Kenyan companies
1. They immediately started quoting in Dollars and when I pointed out that there are also residents amongst us, they only quoted the same in ksh and didn’t offer any real local rate .
2. We needed a Family room or an interconnecting rooms . They instead insisted in trying to sell us two different rooms despite us highlighting that our Children cannot sleep in a different room. They even cited a regulation that doesn’t allow 13 year olds to share a family room with parents .
3. For our 4 year old, they first priced her like a 5 year old and noted that Children above 5 yrs must pay a certain amount, I pointed out that our child is 4 but they only got back noting that even 4 yr olds have to pay a certain amount .
4. I reminded them to give me a good offer that covers my needs but they both used the typical Kenyan Language „ If You Are travelling on budget „ bla bla , . They try to act like you aren’t the Target audience and that they now have to do you a favour getting you „ cheaper .“ Prices . They do this when you speak Swahili to them .
5. Since I was busy with my work and projects , I didn’t have time for the unnecessary back and fourth . I just needed a Company which can consider my needs and Sell me their products without wasting my time .
6. After the absurdity from the local companies, I logged in online and booked my beach Holiday with a German based international Company . I was done with the booking within 30 minutes.
7. Surprisingly, the German offer was at least 3 hundred thousand Kenyan Shillings cheaper ( Around 2k Euros ) , catered for all our needs, our 4 year old wasn’t charged and the Hotel later also confirmed that they don’t charge 4 year olds . This contradicted what the local companies claimed .
8. Finally , Kenyans lost this Business to Germans because of greed and impunity. No tourists or sane Diasporan will waste their time with absurdities, we just move on and take Business elsewhere ! This also applies to the issue below !

Effective labour migration governance in Africa depends on accurate, timely data and years of investment are now paying off. Since 2017, the African Union Commission (AUC), through its Joint Labour Migration Programme (#JLMP), has trained national focal persons and built the data systems now shaping migration policy across the continent.

The Fourth Edition of the Report on Labour Migration Statistics in Africa produced with JLMP partners ILO, IOM, and Statistics Sweden shows the impact:

1. Youth migrant workers (15–35) rose from 4.3M in 2010 to 6.1M in 2022
2. Women remain just 37% of migrant workers, vs. 46% of the total labour force
The report launches at the 6th Ordinary Session of the AU Specialised Technical Committee on Social Development, Labour and Employment (#STCSDLE6).
