This winter story follows Nastenka, a virtuous and hardworking maiden who lives with her cruel stepmother and stepsister —a common trope in folklore.
The stepmother, full of envy, orders Nastenka's father to abandon the girl in the depths of the winter forest.
Left alone to freeze, Nastenka encounters Morozko (Father Frost), the powerful spirit of winter.
He then tests her character by asking if she is warm. Nastenka responds with unwavering politeness and respect. Pleased by her kindness, Morozko rewards her with a beautiful coat and a treasure chest of riches.
Upon Nastenka's return, the greedy stepmother sends her own rude daughter to the same spot, expecting even greater wealth.
However, the selfish daughter insults Morozko. As punishment, Morozko freezes her to death.
The story concludes with Nastenka marrying happily, and the wicked stepmother receiving a grim lesson for her cruelty.
