@opheliamoding I think it goes back further. See for instance the “clever slave” trope of Greek and Roman comedy and how he is usually contrasted against his rural bumpkin twin. He strikes me as a proto example of this
@bloodiedblkgwrl Plus economically, we have inflation that won’t shift no matter the president or party, and overblown but still real fears about structural unemployment from automation!
@EmpressThaliaa Where did you see Ireland being willing to join but Britain being unwilling? I’ve seen, admittedly unsourced the opposite, that Churchill considered giving Ulster to Ireland in exchange for them joining but DeValera didn’t trust him and didn’t want Irish to die in a “British war”
@ElGranSenglar If I had to guess it’s that leftists are unwilling to criticise elites as long as those elites say the right sort of things culturally. Like that leftists are fine with billionaires and rich actors if they say trans rights. The cartoon just takes that to the logical extreme.
@number_pizza111 Especially because he had to make up for absolute negative aura of Thomas Cranmer! Look at the man, he looks like a post divorce Silicon Valley guy.
@LittleMammith That was Jeffersons schtick, that wage labor was inherently demeaning to American morals compared to the humble life of a Yeoman Farmer. And that itself came from a British Tory and larger European tradition of praising agricultural life compared to trade and manufacturing.
@EmpressThaliaa A similar argument can of course be made for Grant, the use of the Union Army as a bludgeon to take Richmond and crush Lee, no matter the cost. Of course both Grant and Zhukov were better commanders than that suggests but it was critical to both of them
@Hanasaku_Yuri But because he’s a New Yorker from that era he doesn’t quite have the ancestral hatred of Republicans, because he can go, look at La Guardia, that’s bi-partisanship and both parties working for the common man.
@OldDreyfusard I am going to say Mark Twain. He is absolutely the sort to get suckered in by it due to the shiny new tech aspect and his distrust for authority and banks. After losing a horrendous amount of money he would learn his lesson, and write a very amusing Substack about the experience.
@madeleinewintr My favourite example is Vespasian, who was the first Emperor not from the city of Rome having a rustic accent. The story goes he said Polstra instead of Plaustra for wagon. This was pointed out by a man named Florus so Vespasian spent the rest of his life calling him Flaurus.
@EmpressThaliaa Australia is, for better and worse, I believe the only nation to have sent troops to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. So I think that gives us the win for most reliable. Greatest is more debatable.
@Hanasaku_Yuri Just another example of out of touch Democrats. Free silver is the compromise! Greenbacks are the cause! Vote for the Populist party and end the two party system!
@un_a_valeable I'm not sure they'll do that but I can see a Mann act style, going interstate for purposes of an abortion is illegal. Really try to lock women into states where they'll ram through abortion bans.
@goblinodds Well in the case of administering certain drugs, if you take a denial of “have you taken narcotics” seriously and it’s a lie, the drug combinations can cause life threatening results. Like yes that can lead to lawsuits but also most doctors and nurses don’t want to hurt patients!
