Today, we find ourselves on the brink of a potential U.S.-led military operation in uncharted territory under the auspices of Operation Prosperity Guardian against the Houthis (refer to the UK statement below). This escalation follows Ansar Allah (Houthi) military spokespersons, for the first time, claiming responsibility for an operation targeting an American ship, allegedly supporting Israel.

Yesterday, the Houthis unleashed a barrage of drones, ballistic and anti-ship missiles (refer to Centcom statement) to target a U.S. asset. They assert this action is a direct response to the U.S. Navy's New Year's incident, sinking three Houthi boats and resulting in the loss of ten Houthi personnel. While Centcom contends it was a defensive measure, the Houthis argue it was an unprovoked attack.

Yesterday's complex attack did not come as a surprise. Prior to the joint Houthi assault, they had signaled their intention to target the U.S. directly. The message conveyed was clear: an Israeli-American coalition “initiated hostilities against Yemeni navy” personnel, sparking what they now term "The Battle of the Promised Conquest and the Holy Jihad."

On January 5, the Houthi-backed Defense Minister, during a visit to the Hudaydah-based 5th MRC, declared that their armed forces would provide a "robust and impactful retaliation to the American attack on their naval forces" on December 31, 2023. On January 8, Safar Al Soufi, the Director of the Office of the “Leader of the Revolution” a.k.a. Abdul Malik Houthi, stated, “You will see what pleases you, and the response to the American enemy will be painful.”

The Houthi's proposed the following unrealistic solutions in order to de-escalate:
1) Surrender U.S. Navy personnel responsible for the ten Houthi fighter deaths for prosecution in Sana’a 
2) Lift the blockade on Gaza and cease Israel’s military operations
