Here are my two cents on the SBIC + NCBA rumored merger.🧵🧵

The biggest news in the kenyan banking sector from yesterday via Bloomberg was that SBIC is in talks to buy NCBA Group.

If true, short term will be buying NCBA as they’ll be bought at a premium.

Long term, SBIC will be the 3rd largest bank behind KCB & EQTY in assets. If integrated properly with NCBA, there will the new bank will achieve great scale and synergies to rival EQTY/KCB/CBE for dominance in East Africa.

Being a long term investor, I bought a starter position in SBIC. Will keep adding until it equals or is close to my KCB position (currently biggest bank holding in my portfolio).

Lingering question I’ll be waiting to be resolved include;

1. What happens to NCBA assets outside Kenya? Especially in countries Standard Bank & NCBA have subsidiaries (Uganda, TZ & Ivory Coast)?

2. Will NCBA Rwanda after merger be a Standard Bank subsidiary or a SBIC subsidiary?

3. How will NCBA’s m-shwari mobile money banking in Ivory Coast be handled? Standard bank has a subsidiary in Ivory Coast by the way.

Dream scenario would be a creation of Stanbic Group East Africa led by Oigara. Its subsidiaries will be
1. Stanbic KE (SBIC + NCBA KE) - led by Gachora
2. Stanbic TZ (Stanbic TZ+ NCBA TZ)
3. Stanbic UG (SBU + NCBA UG)
4. Stanbic Ivory Coast (Stanbic + NCBA m-shwari mobile banking)
5. Stanbic Rwanda (NCBA Rwanda)
6. Stanbic S Sudan
7. AIG Kenya Insurance
8. Stanbic/NCBA bank assurance
9. SBG securities/NCBA investment bank.

But this is not likely to happen, especially in Uganda & Ivory Coast. I feel NCBA assets in those countries will be sold or merged to local standard bank subsidiaries. But we can keep on dreaming!
