PLAYER SPOTLIGHT — JULIEN LE BOURDOULOUS
In the game of football, the 10 shirt is iconic, and at UNC Greensboro, J.C. Ngando immediately comes to mind as arguably one of the most exciting midfielders to play at the collegiate level in recent years. This upcoming season, there will be a new player to don the 10 and that’s Julien Le Bourdoulous, a transfer from UM Kansas City.
Le Bourdoulous is a deep-lying playmaker who thrives when he is on the ball. He’s a conductor and key component in orchestrating the team’s rhythm. Whether he’s threading passes, dictating the tempo or kick-starting attacks and transitions, he’s influential. One thing that truly sets him apart is his ability and willingness to join the attack from a deep lying area of the pitch, often going on mazy, progressive runs with the ball at his feet.
For the Spartans, the objective will be giving the Frenchman the platform to influence games in the manner in which he is capable. That could mean inverting a full back into the midfield, something that UNC Greensboro has done before, or playing with a double pivot to give him more freedom to be adventurous and balancing his athleticism. Whatever the setup, the goal is simple — get Le Bourdoulous on the ball and let him operate.
The expansive style of play under Chris Rich should suit Le Bourdoulous
perfectly. His long-range passing has been on full display all summer with Vermont Green FC, where he has already formed chemistry with new teammates and fellow countrymen Enzo Dovlo and Arnaud Tattevin. I’ve lost count of the number of times Le Bourdoulous has pinged a diagonal ball out to Dovlo on the touchline. This is something we can expect to see a lot this fall. He’ll also look to find the advanced playmakers and inverted wingers in the pockets. As a team, they have done an excellent job occupying the danger zones — the half-spaces within the attacking half. And if an opposition fullback decides to follow a winger inside, he has the vision to play a ball in behind, whether it’s for the overlapping wing back or a weak-side attacker making a run.
As for set pieces? He’ll likely be the go-to option there as well. He’s two-footed and consistently dangerous from dead-ball situations, again, it’s something he showcased both at UM Kansas City and with Vermont Green FC in USL League Two.
An underrated part of his value is the success and experience he brings with him. He knows what it takes. At UM Kansas City, he was the focal point of a team that reached the NCAA Championship’s Round of 16, registering two assists in a clash with the ACC Regular Season Champion Pitt Panthers. He brings maturity, composure and a quiet confidence to a UNC Greensboro side that is looking to build on past success and return to the national spotlight of the postseason.
