The Salmon of College Calls It a Day

Conor Sammon has retired. After 20 years, 700+ appearances and 13 clubs, the Salmon of College has finally stopped swimming.

He started out at UCD and Derry City before his work ethic caught the eye of Kilmarnock, which is the most League of Ireland sentence ever written.

18 goals in 27 games in his final Kilmarnock season and he was off to the Premier League with Wigan Athletic.

From there the tour began. Sheffield United, Derby County, Rotherham, Ipswich, Hearts and Partick Thistle all got a visit. A man who treated football clubs like Airbnbs.

Four yards out at Sheffield United, somehow wide, Billy Sharp standing there with his hands on his hips.

A miss fans will never forget…

He went on to make 210 appearances for Alloa Athletic, 119 more than any other club in his career.

A true Scottish Championship cult hero, which is either a great ending or a sign something went wrong somewhere around 2015.

Nine caps for Ireland, 20 years as a professional, and a career most lads would bite your hand off for.
