Across participating districts in Hirshabelle and Galmudug, Somali citizens are exercising their right to directly choose those who will represent them at local and State level. Despite naysayers who question the value of these elections, expanding meaningful citizen participation remains an important part of strengthening accountable institutions and bringing government closer to the people it serves.
Productive Meeting on Somalia at the Turkish House in New York, on the margins of #UNGA81, with Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
I briefed partners on Somalia's political and security progress, including our first direct "one person, one vote" elections, and on what is needed to protect these gains. Somalia is ready to lead. 🇸🇴
At the UN Security Council’s high-level discussion on AI and international security, I welcomed the remarkable progress in artificial intelligence. We should encourage the progress AI makes possible, confront its misuse and ensure its benefits reach countries and communities that have too often been left behind. No country can manage these challenges alone. Somalia stands ready to work with partners on a future in which innovation serves human dignity, protects international peace and helps narrow the inequalities that already divide our world. https://t.co/t7B6LAqQuo via @YouTube
We deeply appreciate the State of Qatar’s steadfast and principled support for Somalia. This valued solidarity reflects the strength of our fraternal relations and our shared commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, security, and prosperity. Stable and united Somalia contributes the stability of the wider region.
Somalia’s greatest asset is the confidence of its own people. Somalis from the diaspora are returning with capital, skills and ideas opening businesses, creating jobs and connecting Somalia with African and global markets. From new cafés and companies to major real-estate developments, this investment demonstrates what becomes possible when improved security is matched by entrepreneurial energy.

State Minister @AliOmarMP meets Indonesian Ambassador Witjaksono Adji to advance cooperation on blue economy, maritime resources & capacity building. Somalia & Indonesia establish technical teams. Strengthening partnership as fellow OIC members. @Kemlu_RI#Diplomacy
Today I was pleased to receive H.E. Ambassador T.B.H. Witjaksono Adji and the Indonesian delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mogadishu. Our discussions reaffirmed the strong friendship between Somalia and Indonesia and our shared commitment to expanding cooperation based on mutual respect, solidarity, and common interests. We agreed to build on the positive momentum created by our recent engagements and translate our partnership into practical results that benefit both our peoples.
It was a pleasure to welcome Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (#EALA) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation today. Their visit reflects Somalia’s growing engagement within the East African Community and the confidence our regional partners have in our country’s progress. Stronger regional cooperation is essential for advancing trade, connectivity, investment, and shared prosperity across East Africa.
Democracy rewards participation, organization, and persistence. The opposition had every opportunity to form parties, present alternative programmes, mobilize communities, recruit candidates, and compete for the confidence of voters. By failing to enter the contest effectively, they left the political field open for JSP and those political organizations which participated the ongoing elections to consolidate their position. Political influence cannot be claimed from the sidelines or secured through social-media commentary; it must be earned through direct engagement with the people.
As Jesse Jackson once said when asked why is he running for the US presidency “If you run, you may succeed. If you do not run, you are guaranteed to fail.” Those who aspire to govern must have the courage to compete, seek a democratic mandate, and respect the verdict of the voters. Leadership is earned at the ballot box not through boycott, withdrawal, or criticism after the contest.
Long queues at polling stations across Galmudug send a clear message: Somalis want to participate in choosing their leaders. These images reflect a nation moving beyond elite-driven politics toward broader public participation. Every vote cast today is another step in strengthening democratic institutions and building a more accountable and representative Somalia. This is progress that deserves recognition and encouragement.
Today belongs to the people of Galmudug. Their patience, determination, and commitment to voting demonstrate the growing democratic spirit taking root across Somalia. From Banadir and South West State to Galmudug, the expansion of one-person, one-vote elections is steadily reshaping our political landscape. The future will be defined by citizens exercising their democratic rights, and today’s participation is another milestone on that journey.
The vibrant election campaign unfolding across Galmudug is something every Somali can take pride in. Public rallies, political debate, and citizen participation are replacing elite-driven politics with democratic competition. This is a powerful reminder that Somalia is moving forward. Those who continue to claim the country is regressing fail to recognize the historic transformation taking place before our eyes. The Somali people have embraced democracy, and that momentum cannot be reversed.

Please to meet H.E. Musa Kulaklıkaya, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, for a productive discussion on strengthening the enduring strategic partnership between Somalia and Türkiye.

Pleased to meet H.E. Olof Skoog, Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the EEAS, to discuss the evolving partnership between Somalia and the European Union. I briefed him on the progress Somalia is making in strengthening national security, advancing constitutional and electoral reforms, and creating new opportunities for trade and investment. Somalia is ready for a more ambitious partnership with the EU one based on mutual interests, strategic dialogue, and shared responsibility for regional peace and prosperity.
Had a productive meeting with H.E. Ambassador Luke Feeney of the EU Political and Security Committee. I thanked the European Union for its longstanding contribution to Somalia’s security transition and capacity-building efforts. Our discussions focused on the changing geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa, the importance of preserving regional stability, and deepening cooperation to address shared security challenges.
As Somalia safeguards its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, we count on the continued solidarity of the OACPS and our partners in supporting our constitutional order and internationally recognized borders. Upholding these principles strengthens not only Somalia but also the rules-based international order that underpins peace, stability, and cooperation among nations.
I sincerely thank my brother, H.E. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, and the Government of Mauritania for the warm welcome and constructive official talks today. Our discussions reflected the depth of the brotherly relationship between Somalia and Mauritania and our shared desire to translate goodwill into practical cooperation. We also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest and agreed on the importance of continued consultation and coordination.
